Traditional autumn Kirchweih with a parade of Unity Couples
The town of Ludwigsstadt in the Kronach district, located in the far north of Upper Franconia on the border with Thuringia, celebrates its traditional Kirchweih every year in September. Organized by the Kirchweihgesellschaft Ludwigsstadt, the "Kerwa" is one of the social highlights of the year.
The highlight is Kirchweih Sunday: From the morning onwards, traders set up their stalls in the historic market square. In the early afternoon, the parade of Unity Couples sets off – led by the mayor, it proceeds through the town to the Hermann-Söllner-Halle. A musical Kirchweih afternoon with the Stadtkapelle follows, and in the evening, the traditional dance evening with live music. Already on Thursday and Friday, local inns serve the "Schlachtschüssel" (butcher's platter).
Culinary, Thuringian dumplings and bratwurst specialties characterize the festival – a reflection of Ludwigsstadt's special location on the Bavarian-Thuringian border. The local innkeepers spoil their guests with typical Kirchweih dishes.
