Franconian Kirchweih in the Frankenwald (Kronach district)
The Trachtenkirchweih Steinbach am Wald is one of the most vibrant Trachtenkirchweihen in the Oberfranken district of Kronach. It is organized every year on the second Sunday in July by the Kirchweihgesellschaft Steinbach am Wald and is part of the rich tradition of the Frankenwald region. Steinbach am Wald is located at an altitude of around 600 m on the Bavarian-Thuringian border, nestled in the Frankenwald Nature Park.
The focus is on the Zechpaare – young couples in original Franconian traditional costume who lead the festival. After the Kirchweih church service, the festival procession moves through the village to the Plan, a decorated dance area around the Kirchweih tree. Traditionally, three dances are performed here to brass band music – a custom passed down through generations. The festival tent, family meals with regional specialties, 'Frühschoppen' (morning pint), festival parades with schoolchildren and anniversary couples, and a concluding festival Monday round off the program.
The special feature of the municipality of Steinbach am Wald: All five districts (Steinbach, Kehlbach, Hirschfeld, Windheim, and Buchbach) celebrate their own Trachtenkirchweihen, each on different Sundays between July and October. This living density of customs makes the town a focal point of Franconian folk culture in the state of Bavaria, Kronach district. Those who want to experience authentic Franconian traditional costume, Plantanz, and community spirit will find one of the most vibrant Kirchweih landscapes in all of Upper Franconia here.
The Trachtenkirchweih Steinbach am Wald 2026 will be hosted by the Kirchweihgesellschaft Steinbach am Wald from July 10 to 13. The second Sunday in July has been the traditional date for the main Kirchweih for generations.
The Zechpaare in Franconian traditional costume will open the festival weekend on Friday evening. On Saturday, the focus will be on the festival tent, a dance evening, and catering. Sunday will feature the Kirchweih church service and the traditional Plantanz around the decorated Kirchweih tree as the festive highlight – the Zechpaare will dance three dances to brass band music. On Monday, a festival parade with schoolchildren and anniversary couples will conclude the festival. Exact program details will be published by the Kirchweihgesellschaft shortly before the date.
Festival grounds freely accessible. Food, drinks, and festival tent catering are purchased on site. Sources: steinbach-am-wald.de, fraenkische-kirchweih.de.
