Living Zoigl Tradition in the Oberpfalz

The Eslarner Zoigltag at Strehern's represents living Zoigl beer culture in the Oberpfalz. Eslarn is located in the district of Neustadt an der Waldnaab in the administrative region of Oberpfalz in Bavaria, directly on the border with the Czech Republic. Zoigl is an under-fermented beer traditionally brewed in the communal brewery, which the brewery-authorized citizens serve in their Zoiglstuben in rotation. Eslarn is one of the five Zoigl strongholds of the Oberpfalz – alongside Mitterteich, Neuhaus, Windischeschenbach, and Falkenberg.

The Zoiglstube "Beim Strehern"

The Zoiglstube "Beim Strehern" at Tillystraße 4 serves authentic Zoigl beer from the communal brewery. The hearty snacks include specialties from their own butchery, Kesselfleisch, as well as products from their own distillery. The cozy, rustic atmosphere of the Zoiglstube is typical of the Oberpfalz inn culture.

Intangible Cultural Heritage

The Oberpfalz Zoigl culture has been recognized as intangible cultural heritage. It combines artisanal brewing tradition, communal brewing in the communal brewery, and convivial inn culture into a unique custom. The Zoigl star, as the serving sign, points the way to the open establishment.

Anniversary 2026

In 2026, Eslarn will celebrate a special Zoigl anniversary – the tradition dates back to 1522. Regular Zoigl dates take place throughout the year; the Pentecost date around the Kirchweih (church consecration festival) is one of the highlights of the Zoigl calendar.
