About Schönseer Kirwa

The Schönseer Kirwa is one of the most characteristic Kirchweihen in the Oberpfälzer Wald. On a Sunday in July, the border town of Schönsee transforms into a colorful stage: an international street food market with specialties from around 15 nations scents the main street, while at the Raiffeisengelände, the Land&Gut association celebrates with vintage cars, a petting zoo, and regional producers. Tradition and the present meet here in a cross-border format.

A Kirwa between Bavaria and Bohemia

The Schönseer Kirwa is more than a classic Bavarian Kirchweih: it is an expression of the cross-border world of life in the Oberpfälzer Wald. Schönsee is located directly on the border with the Czech Republic in the district of Schwandorf — the program, which transforms the entire main street into an open-air stage in July, is accordingly open and diverse.

Two festival areas, two characters

The festival takes place at two locations: at the Raiffeisengelände in Bahnhofstraße, the agricultural and craft side of the region is showcased with vintage cars, a petting zoo, information stands, and regional products. In the Hauptstraße, on the other hand, there is an international flair: around 15 street food stations offer specialties from Poland, the Czech Republic, the Balkans, Asia, and Latin America.

Program and atmosphere

  • Street Food Market from 11:30 a.m. with around 15 nations
  • Roast pork and traditional dishes in the beer garden
  • Vintage car exhibition with vehicles from the Czech Republic (12–3 p.m. at the town hall)
  • Petting zoo, bouncy castle, face painting for the youngest guests
  • Live dance by the East End Stompers, traditional costume presentation by Trachten Ebnet
  • Flea market and handicrafts
  • Information stand of the Johanniter with an ambulance

Tradition meets progress

The original Kerwa tradition – the Kirchweih festival to celebrate the consecration of the parish church – is still palpable in Schönsee, but the festival has consciously opened up. With the 30th anniversary of the Land&Gut association, the Kirwa gained additional radiance as a showcase for regional economy. Schönsee sees itself today as a bridge town in the Bohemian-Bavarian region, and the Kirwa is one of the most visible stages for this self-image.

Schönseer Kirwa — edition 2026

On July 13, 2026, Schönsee in the Oberpfalz will once again transform into an international festival stage. Street food from 15 nations on the main street, the Raiffeisengelände with vintage cars and a petting zoo, live dance, and traditional costume fashion form the framework of a Kirwa that connects Bavaria and Bohemia.

The Schönseer Kirwa 2026 will take place on Monday, July 13, 2026. Both festival areas — the Raiffeisengelände on Bahnhofstraße and the central Hauptstraße — will be open from late morning, with the street food market starting at 11:30 a.m.

The focus will once again be on the coexistence of generations and cultures around the Schönsee–Bělá border region. The organizers from the Land&Gut association are continuing the multi-year tradition of staging the Kirwa as a showcase for regional economy and international street food. The official city program and any current program changes can be found via the city of Schönsee and in publications in the Oberpfalz press (e.g., Onetz, Oberpfalzecho).
