International Kirchweih on the Czech Republic border
The Schönseer Kirwa is more than a classic Bavarian Kirchweih: it is an expression of the cross-border world of life in the Oberpfälzer Wald. Schönsee is located directly on the border with the Czech Republic in the district of Schwandorf — the program, which transforms the entire main street into an open-air stage in July, is accordingly open and diverse.
The festival takes place at two locations: at the Raiffeisengelände in Bahnhofstraße, the agricultural and craft side of the region is showcased with vintage cars, a petting zoo, information stands, and regional products. In the Hauptstraße, on the other hand, there is an international flair: around 15 street food stations offer specialties from Poland, the Czech Republic, the Balkans, Asia, and Latin America.
The original Kerwa tradition – the Kirchweih festival to celebrate the consecration of the parish church – is still palpable in Schönsee, but the festival has consciously opened up. With the 30th anniversary of the Land&Gut association, the Kirwa gained additional radiance as a showcase for regional economy. Schönsee sees itself today as a bridge town in the Bohemian-Bavarian region, and the Kirwa is one of the most visible stages for this self-image.
The Schönseer Kirwa 2026 will take place on Monday, July 13, 2026. Both festival areas — the Raiffeisengelände on Bahnhofstraße and the central Hauptstraße — will be open from late morning, with the street food market starting at 11:30 a.m.
The focus will once again be on the coexistence of generations and cultures around the Schönsee–Bělá border region. The organizers from the Land&Gut association are continuing the multi-year tradition of staging the Kirwa as a showcase for regional economy and international street food. The official city program and any current program changes can be found via the city of Schönsee and in publications in the Oberpfalz press (e.g., Onetz, Oberpfalzecho).
Free admission. Food and drinks are paid for at the street food market and in the beer garden at the respective prices; individual children's attractions may incur a small fee.
Schönsee is located in the far northeast of the Oberpfalz. By car via the A 93 (exit Schwandorf, then continue via Oberviechtach) or from the Czech Republic via the Friedrichshäng border crossing. Train travelers go to Schwarzenfeld and change to the bus.
Free admission. Food, drinks, and the bouncy castle are paid for on site.
Those who arrive in the morning have the choice at the street food stalls; it gets crowded in the late afternoon. A visit can be well combined with a hike in the Oberpfälzer Wald Nature Park or a trip to Bělá nad Radbuzou (CZ).
