Ten days of Heimatfest with a grand parade, riflemen, and marquee festivities
Eslarn is a market town in the Neustadt an der Waldnaab district in the northern Oberpfalz, directly on the Czech border. With about 2,500 inhabitants, Eslarn is small but rich in tradition and clubs. The Heimatfest, held every two to three years, is the market town's largest social event — a ten-day festival that gets the entire village and surrounding region buzzing.
The opening traditionally takes place on the first Saturday of the festival: On August 1, 2026, at 6 PM, the festival begins with the performance of fanfares and festival speakers, and from 7 PM, the Zinnfelder-Polka-Kapelle will play in the festival marquee. This marks the start of ten days of marquee festivities.
The highlight is the parade on August 3, 2026, at 2 PM. The procession starts at the historic Kommunbrauhaus (one of Germany's oldest municipal breweries, still active in Eslarn today) and leads through the main street to Atzmannsee on the outskirts of the town. Clubs, traditional costume groups, music bands, historical floats, and riflemen from Eslarn and the entire Neustadt a.d. Waldnaab district participate — an impressive display of Oberpfalz club culture.
In the festival marquee on the fairgrounds, various music groups alternate daily — brass music, traditional costume and folk music groups, regional cover bands, and party bands. A special touch is the classic Bavarian comedy on August 9. The spectacular finale on August 10: around 100 riflemen from Eslarn and the surrounding area will fire a festive salute together — an acoustically and atmospherically unique highlight that can be heard far into the northern Oberpfalz and neighboring Czech Republic.
Eslarn's Kommunbrauhaus is a Bavarian rarity: a municipal brewery that has been operated by the town's citizens for centuries. The festival beer for the Heimatfest comes from this own brewery — an authentic detail that distinguishes the Heimatfest from ordinary folk festivals.
The 2026 edition continues the diverse Heimatfest program that Eslarn has cherished for generations. The festival marquee on the fairgrounds is open daily, with the music program alternating between brass music, folk music, traditional costume and dance music, and regional cover bands. The festival kitchen offers Bavarian specialties — from roast pork to plum crumble cake.
Eslarn's special feature: The festival beer comes from the local Kommunbrauhaus, one of the few still active municipal breweries in Germany. This gives the festival an authentic, unique character that large folk festivals with industrial beer lack.
