Five weeks of brass music in concert halls, churches, and inns
Bluval (an artificial composition from the Latin roots for 'to blow' and 'valley' – the Danube valley around Straubing) was founded in the mid-1990s by a small initiative of Lower Bavarian music patrons. Over three decades, a regional concert series has evolved into an internationally recognized festival, whose program quality is supported by personalities such as the Munich Radio Orchestra, international soloists, and composers. The 31st edition in autumn 2025 underscored its significance with over 70 ensembles, masterclasses, and a dense program week.
The festival's DNA is 'brass': woodwind and brass instruments in all imaginable formations, from symphonic works to big bands, brass bands, and chamber music, to the traditional brass music of the region and Bohemia. In recent years, Bluval has also innovatively embraced jazz, world music, and cross-over projects between classical and folk music.
Venues over five weeks include Straubing's concert spaces (including Stadttheater am Hagen, Bühne am Hagen, Stadthalle, Citydom), Baroque churches like St. Jakob and the Carmelite Church, Lower Bavarian inns, and – on Bluval Saturday – the entire city center with free open-air and indoor concerts. International masterclasses with world-class instructors, shaping the next decade of brass music, run in parallel.
With the key dates of September 5 and October 10, 2026, announced by Bluval e.V., the festival will once again span its classic five-week period in its 32nd edition. The complete program is expected to be released in the summer of 2026. The mix that has made Bluval famous is anticipated: large symphonic concerts with international brass ensembles, intimate chamber music in Baroque churches, jazz and big band programs in the Stadthalle and Citydom, inn music in Lower Bavarian taverns, and Bluval Saturday with free concerts in Straubing's old town.
The International Masterclasses will take place parallel to the concert program, allowing young brass musicians from around the world to work with top instructors. The masterclass concerts themselves are often part of the public program and are considered insider tips for discovering the next generation.
The exact 2026 program will be published gradually on bluval.de and straubing.de. The typical structure:
