Wine festival in Eppendorf — three days of 'Achterl', live music, and summer flair
In Hamburg's Eimsbüttel district lies the quarter of Eppendorf, one of the most expensive and simultaneously charming residential areas in the Hanseatic city. Red-brick old buildings, small boutiques, long-established cafés, and a distinct local life characterize the scene. Eppendorfer Landstraße is the main artery — and in August, the venue for the Eppendorfer Achtel.
The name refers to the Austrian "Achterl" — a 125-milliliter glass of wine, traditionally enjoyed in a relaxed tasting setting at a 'Heuriger' (wine tavern). The Eppendorfer Achtel brings exactly this spirit to the Hamburg summer: not a hectic drinking spree, but a wine weekend for strolling, tasting, comparing, and relaxing in a garden-chair atmosphere.
The festival stretches along Eppendorfer Landstraße between Eppendorfer Baum and Haynstraße — a few hundred meters of pedestrian zone with cafés on either side. The atmosphere is relaxed and urban: you can stroll between the stalls, join a queue at a bar, or simply stand by the roadside and watch the hustle and bustle.
Hamburg is not a wine city, but a beer city — Astra, Holsten, Ratsherrn define the lifestyle. That's precisely why the Eppendorfer Achtel works: it brings what's missing in the city to one of its most bourgeois districts for three days. Wine lovers will find German, Austrian, Italian, and French producers here without having to travel far into wine regions.
The 2026 edition uses the last weekend of August before school starts to transform Eppendorf into a summer wine garden. Eppendorfer Landstraße between Eppendorfer Baum and Haynstraße will be closed to traffic for three days; tables and benches will turn the street space into an outdoor lounge.
The organizer is the IG Eppendorfer Landstraße, which has established the format over several years with the support of the City of Hamburg. The selection of winegrowers changes annually, but the underlying theme remains: regional to European, quality-oriented, without mass-produced wine.
