Sustainable Christmas Market on St. Markus Church Square
While the major tourist markets around Rathausmarkt and Jungfernstieg are overcrowded in December, Adventszeit St. Markus offers a quieter, locally rooted alternative. The Christmas market is located on the St. Markus Church Square in the Hoheluft-West district, within the Eimsbüttel borough, directly on the U2 subway line.
The concept is consistently sustainable: vendors primarily offer regional, seasonal, and fair-trade certified products. Vegetarian options are abundant – a conscious counterpoint to the meat- and sweets-focused major markets. Classic winter drinks (mulled wine, punch) are available alongside traditional seasonal foods, from hearty sausage specialties to sweet pastries.
The market clearly targets families:
A Hamburg specialty of Adventszeit St. Markus: On Thursday evenings, a DJ plays, transforming the atmosphere from a family market to a relaxed after-work meeting point for the neighborhood around Hoheluft-Chaussee and Eppendorfer Landstraße.
The market supports the "Advent im Schuhkarton" initiative: Visitors can fill shoeboxes with gifts for those in need. A social component that aligns with the church's sponsorship and distinguishes the market from purely commercial events.
Hoheluft-West, with just under 10,000 inhabitants, is one of Hamburg's smaller districts but is strategically located between the densely populated neighborhoods of Eppendorf, Eimsbüttel, and Hoheluft-Ost. The St. Markus Church forms the geographical and identity-defining center. The market accordingly attracts primarily a local audience from the surrounding areas.
Adventszeit St. Markus is planned again for 2026. Based on the previous year's event (November 25 – December 21, 2025), the period is expected to be from approximately late November to December 21, 2026. Specific dates will be communicated in autumn 2026 via the official channels of the St. Markus parish.
The concept remains unchanged: a sustainable market with regional, seasonal, and fair-trade certified products, a children's program on selected days, DJ Thursdays, and joint Advent singing in the church.
