Residents' flea market in the front gardens of the small Bauhaus settlement on the Lokstedt/Eimsbüttel border
What distinguishes this flea market from the larger Hamburg flea market events is its presentation: the approximately 30 to 40 stalls are not located in a central marketplace but are spread throughout the residents' front gardens. You stroll through the streets of the small Bauhaus settlement, looking at a table with vintage tableware here, a clothes rack there, or boxes of books and toys. The atmosphere is more reminiscent of a North German garage sale than the commercial mega-events on Heiligengeistfeld.
The small Bauhaus settlement on the border between Lokstedt and Eimsbüttel is an architectural gem from the 1920s – flat roofs, cubic shapes, small front gardens, clear lines in the style of the early 20th-century reform movement. It is not to be confused with the famous Bauhaus school in Dessau but is a North German adaptation of the style. The settlement is partly a listed monument and a rarely visited sight – the flea market is one of the few opportunities to explore the streets without intruding on residents' privacy.
As it is purely a residents' flea market, the offerings are unsorted by definition: vintage clothing next to baby toys, next to furniture, next to books, next to tableware, next to plants from the garden. This very unsorted nature is the appeal – those who come here are not looking for a professional setup but for real bargains and conversations with the residents. Cake, coffee, and occasional drink stands are operated ad hoc from individual gardens.
Lokstedt is located in the Eimsbüttel district, bordering the Hamburg-Nord district. The district has around 30,000 inhabitants and is considered one of the greenest and most livable neighborhoods in the western city center – with Tibarg in the northwest and the University of Hamburg in the south within reach. The flea market takes place once a year; in good weather, it is one of the locally most popular neighborhood events in the state of Hamburg.
The 2026 edition continues the established concept: no stall fees for external participants, no central organizer, but a self-organized neighborhood initiative. The residents of the small Bauhaus settlement agree on a Sunday morning, decorate their front gardens, and open them to visitors from the surrounding area.
The date at the end of May is well chosen – the weather is usually mild, school holidays are not yet in sight, and the market does not directly compete with the major Hamburg spring flea markets on Heiligengeistfeld or in Flohschanze. Residents, families from Eimsbüttel, and visitors to Hagenbeck come by.
