Arthouse cinema under the open sky with headphones in Stadtpark Eimsbüttel
Hamburg has established several open-air cinema formats in recent years — from Schanzenkino to the Filmfest in HafenCity. Among these, the filmRaum Open Air in Stadtpark Eimsbüttel stands out with its clear profile: not a blockbuster selection, but arthouse cinema. Independent films, arthouse productions, occasionally revivals of classic films — a curation aimed at cinema connoisseurs, rather than chasing the mass market.
The venue is Stadtpark Eimsbüttel at Hagenbeckstraße 39, in the Eimsbüttel district of the same name. The park is a green oasis in densely populated Eimsbüttel, and due to its location between Hagenbeck Zoo and Lutterothstraße, it is one of Hamburg's liveliest family parks. The open-air screenings take place on an open meadow area that offers enough space for approximately 300 guests.
A technical special feature: due to noise protection regulations, the sound is not broadcast through speakers but via headphones. Each visitor receives a wireless headset at the entrance and can adjust the film sound individually. This has two advantages: firstly, there is no noise pollution for the residents, and secondly, the sound quality is excellent due to the direct transmission into the headphones — even the most delicate soundtrack moments are audible.
The open-air cinema runs four days a week:
There are no fixed seats — visitors bring blankets or folding chairs. The maximum number of guests is limited to 300; reservations are not possible. Tickets are available online at filmraum.net or directly at the box office (cash or EC card).
Eimsbüttel is one of Hamburg's most densely populated districts — making green spaces like the Stadtpark all the more valuable. The filmRaum Open Air utilizes this urban nature for a deliberately curated film program, establishing itself as the arthouse open-air cinema of Hamburg's west.
The filmRaum team is preparing the 2026 season. As in previous years, main films will be shown on Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday evenings after dark; Friday is dedicated to the family program. Arthouse cinema style, wireless headphones as sound technology, a maximum of 300 guests per screening. Specific films will be published on filmraum.net.
