Traditional funfair in Koogstraße — rides, stalls, and a grand finale firework display
The Volksfest Brunsbüttel is a staple of the summer calendar in the Dithmarschen district. Brunsbüttel — an industrial hub and city at the western mouth of the Kiel Canal — is located in the Dithmarschen district of Schleswig-Holstein and is widely known as the "Gateway to the Canal". Every year in early August, the funfair enlivens the city centre, attracting visitors from across the region between Cuxhaven, Itzehoe, and Heide.
Unlike the often folkloric Volksfeste of Southern Germany, Brunsbüttel offers a classic Northern German experience: rides such as dodgems, a chain carousel, and a Ferris wheel, alongside prize stalls, shooting galleries, chocolate-covered fruits, and roasted almonds. The entire spectrum of the traditional showman industry is represented on Koogstraße.
The highlight is the grand firework display on Monday evening — a spectacle that draws numerous spectators, many from outside the city. The fireworks traditionally mark the end of summer in Brunsbüttel and are jointly organised by the showmen's association and the city.
The Volksfest runs daily from 2 PM to 11 PM and is particularly family-friendly in the afternoons — children's rides, carousels, and chain carousels dominate the early hours. In the evening, the crowd diversifies: families, teenagers, regulars, and tourists from the canal.
The Volksfest is one of Schleswig-Holstein's classic market events and has been held in Brunsbüttel for decades in the first week of August. It complements the city's annual event calendar, which is otherwise characterised by its maritime identity — canal trips, harbour festivals, and lock tours.
The 2026 edition is confirmed on the official event calendar of the city of Brunsbüttel. As in previous years, the Volksfest will occupy Koogstraße in the city centre, with a classic showman setup and daily operating hours from 2 PM to 11 PM.
The event is organised by the city of Brunsbüttel, in collaboration with the regional showmen's association.
