Eight stages, medieval market, creative mile, and Japanese garden – Kaiserslautern's largest city festival
Since 1979, the Altstadtfest Kaiserslautern has been the most traditional and largest city festival event in the West Palatinate capital. From Friday, July 3rd to Sunday, July 5th, 2026, the entire area between Spittelstraße and Mainzer Tor will become an open-air festival mile. The event combines a broad musical program with market activities, creative offerings, children's programs, and culinary specialties from the region.
A total of eight stages will be active across the festival grounds. They are musically profiled differently: one stage presents brass and folk music, another specializes in soul and funk, while other stages are dedicated to rock, hip-hop, Schlager, and popular cover bands. Local radio Antenne Kaiserslautern also hosts its own stage with a curated lineup. This creates a continuous soundscape that fills the city center almost uninterruptedly over the three days.
Around St. Martin's Church, ProHistory organizes the medieval market: stalls with historical crafts, medieval music, camp life with reenactment groups, and hands-on activities for families. Concurrently, the Rittersberg transforms into the creative mile featuring arts and crafts, small studios, sales booths for regional design products, and interactive formats. Both areas lend the Altstadtfest a depth that goes beyond a classic stage festival.
The 'Lautern tanzt' event brings dance stages, dance schools, and performance dancers to public squares and the pedestrian zone. The Japanese Garden within the festival area offers a quieter atmosphere for visitors seeking a moment of relaxation between the lively stage areas. Several street theater groups will roam the festival grounds over the three days, providing comical, poetic, or acrobatic moments in unexpected places.
Three days of a broadly based city festival with the typical mix of music, medieval market, creative mile, dance events, and gastronomic diversity. The exact stage program will be published by the organizer in spring 2026.
