Maritime festival all about herring at the Old Harbour of Hooksiel
The Hooksieler Heringstage is a declaration of love for herring and the maritime heritage of the Frisian coast. For four days, the Old Harbour of Hooksiel, with its historic houses, cutters, and jetties, transforms into a vibrant festival where tradition, culinary delights, and live music meet.
On Friday afternoon, the festival begins with the traditional free beer tapping at the harbour. The mayor and organisers officially open the Heringstage and invite the first guests for a tasting.
Over the four days, several bands will perform on the harbour stage. The Blaue Jungs will bring maritime atmosphere with shanties and Low German songs, the Tonic Brothers will play handmade rock and pop, and the Hitfluencer will provide party vibes with a mix of cover songs until late in the evening.
Fresh Matjes, fried herring, herring rolls, Bismarck herring, and creative herring variations – the speciality stalls at the harbour offer herring the stage it deserves. Plus, shrimp, fish straight from the cutter, fish rolls, and of course, Frisian beer.
The German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS) will be on site with its information mobile, providing insights into the work of sea rescuers funded by donations. Those interested can take a look on board a sea rescue cruiser when it docks in the harbour.
Hooksiel is one of the most beautiful coastal towns in the Wangerland region, with its historic harbour, typical Frisian brick buildings, and proximity to the Wadden Sea (UNESCO World Heritage Site). The Heringstage are a perfect opportunity to get to know this special place.
The 2026 edition builds on the successful tradition of previous years, making herring once again the centrepiece of a four-day harbour festival. Wangerland Touristik GmbH is organising the festival in close cooperation with local restaurateurs, associations, and fishmongers.
With views of the cutters, the Wadden Sea, and the typical Frisian harbour architecture, Hooksiel becomes a magnet for guests from Lower Saxony and Bremen during Pentecost.
