Season Opening on the Marketplace

The Steinach Spring Festival marks the symbolic transition from winter to spring in the town on the Rennsteig. When the first warm days arrive in the Thuringian Forest, the town of Steinach invites residents and guests to the marketplace. Stalls with regional specialties, stands offering spring plants and seasonal produce, live music, and activities for the whole family transform the marketplace into an open-air festival space.

Steinach — Toy Town on the Rennsteig

Steinach is located in the Sonneberg district in the state of Thuringia, in the heart of the southern Thuringian Forest. For centuries, the town was one of the centers of the Thuringian glass art and toy industry – lead crystal, glass spheres, and the famous Steinach lead crystal have a rich history here. Today, the town, with its approximately 3,500 inhabitants, is a starting point for hikes along the Rennsteig, Germany's most famous long-distance hiking trail. The Spring Festival is an opportunity to get to know this small town outside the main tourist season.

Weekly Market Flair and Family Festival

The festival has the character of an extended weekly market: regional producers offer food, baked goods, honey, plants, and crafts. Clubs serve drinks, musicians play, and children run around the square. It's not a major tourist event, but a typical Thuringian neighborhood festival – cozy, local, and authentic.

Starting Point for the Rennsteig

For those already in the region, the market visit can be perfectly combined with a hike. The Rennsteig trail runs just a few kilometers north of Steinach. The nearby mining town of Lauscha (glass art, inventor of Christmas tree baubles), the toy town of Sonneberg with the German Toy Museum, and the Saalfeld Fairy Grottoes mine are all reachable within a 30–45 minute drive.
