Open-air theatre at the Hexentanzplatz — Walpurgis, concerts, and family musicals from June to September
In the state of Saxony-Anhalt, in the Harz district, lies one of the most mythical landscapes in Germany: the Bodetal valley with its cliffs, the Rosstrappe, and the Hexentanzplatz — according to legend, the dancing place of witches on Walpurgis Night. It is precisely here, on the cliff edge high above Thale, that the Harzer Bergtheater has stood since 1903. Steep rows of seats nestle into a natural semi-circle, with the Bode gorge behind and a rocky massif in front of the stage. An atmosphere you won't find in a plush armchair.
Five years of renovation have equipped the Bergtheater with new stage technology, modern lighting, an LED stage cross, and around 600 additional seats. Since the 2025 season, a packed summer programme has been running again — and 2026 promises an especially full lineup.
The summer season covers three areas: family musicals (Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver, Ariel the Little Mermaid), the in-house production “Walpurgis — the Musical” (a homage to the Harz's witch mythology, performed several times each summer), and above all, concerts by big names. In 2026, Jethro Tull, Suzi Quatro, KARAT, Spider Murphy Gang, voXXclub, Die Prinzen, Saltatio Mortis, and others are scheduled. Classical concerts and tribute shows complement the programme.
From Thale station, you can reach the Bergtheater by cable car — during the day. For evening events, the cable car doesn't run, so you'll need to take a shuttle or drive up by car. Anyone listening to Suzi Quatro over the Bodetal on a warm summer evening knows: you don't have to go to Bayreuth.
For 2026, the Bergtheater Thale has put together one of its most packed summer programmes. Tickets for the concert highlights have been on sale since autumn 2025 — early booking is recommended for Jethro Tull, Suzi Quatro, and Die Prinzen.
