District Kirchweih at the Paulusstein in Nuremberg North
Nuremberg is the German city with the most district Kirchweihen: from the end of April to the end of September, around 40 districts take turns with their Kärwa (Kirchweih) weekends. What began in the Middle Ages as the consecration festival of the respective church has today developed into a network of village-like folk festivals that showcase the unique character of each Nuremberg district. The Kirchweih Buchenbühl is one of the smaller, but precisely for that reason, most atmospheric of these festivals.
The venue for the Kirchweih is the Paulusstein, a historical memorial stone on the municipal connecting road between Nuremberg, Kalchreuth, and Heroldsberg. It is considered the original settlement center of the Buchenbühl district and has shaped the character of the festival ever since: it takes place not on a modern festival ground, but at a location of historical significance.
Buchenbühl is located in the far northeast of Nuremberg and still has a village character for long stretches. Fields, the edges of the Reichswald forest, and single-family homes dominate the landscape. The district Kirchweih plays an important role in the identity of the place – once a year, Buchenbühl meets as Buchenbühl, not as a district of Nuremberg.
The Nuremberg City Property Administration Office publishes the official Kirchweih calendar with all 40 dates every spring – including Buchenbühl. Applications for showmen's pitches are also handled through the Property Administration Office. The dates are stable long-term and are part of the summer rhythm for many Nuremberg residents.
The Nuremberg Kirchweih calendar 2026 lists the Buchenbühl district Kirchweih from Friday, July 17 to Monday, July 20, 2026, at the Paulusstein. The application period for showmen and the festival host runs early through the Nuremberg City Property Administration Office.
The weekend follows the typical Franconian Kärwa choreography: Friday evening opening with beer tapping, Saturday festival operation with live music, Sunday family afternoon, Monday traditionally the festival conclusion with festival host specialties. Exact daily schedules and performances will be announced in advance on local Nuremberg platforms (nordbayern.de, nn.de).
Detailed daily program will be published shortly before the festival on local district platforms and on nuernberg.de.
