The festival for modern Alpine music in the Passion Theater
The Heimatsound Festival is one of the most important festivals for the contemporary music scene from the German-Austrian-Italian Alpine region. The term "Heimatsound" originates from a BR program of the same name and has represented a music movement for over ten years that has little to do with folk music in the Dirndl-Schlager tradition: it focuses on artists who relate to their region, often sing in dialect, but incorporate pop, folk, indie, electronic, hip-hop, and songwriter aesthetics.
The venue is the Passion Theater Oberammergau – the impressive open-air stage with over 4,500 seats, where the famous Passion Plays have taken place every ten years since 1634. For the Heimatsound Festival, a partially covered area with around 2,000 seats is used: rain-resistant, suitable for seated concerts, yet with an open-air atmosphere. Its location at the foot of the Ammergau Alps gives the concerts a unique setting.
The festival runs as a two-day concert series, on Friday and Saturday. Bayern 2 broadcasts about ten hours live each day, supplemented by reports, interviews, and backstage sessions. This media coverage has made the Heimatsound Festival a curatorial reference point for modern Alpine music: those who perform here are among the top tier of the Heimatsound movement.
The festival has featured bands such as LaBrassBanda, Voodoo Jürgens, Hubert von Goisern, Bonaparte, Kofelgschroa, Dicht & Ergreifend, and Liedfett – and has provided a supra-regional platform for many younger artists like FIVA, Dreiviertelblut, and Sigi Schwabs Tochter.
Oberammergau, with just under 5,000 inhabitants in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district, is famous for its Passion Plays, Lüftlmalerei facades, and wood carving art. Its location in the Ammergau Alps Nature Park, surrounded by alpine pastures, hiking trails, and the Kofel mountain, is a good reason to combine the festival weekend with a few days of vacation. The region is used by many festival guests as a short holiday destination in the summer.
In 2026, Heimatsound sticks to its two-day format: Friday, July 31st, and Saturday, August 1st, each a festival day with five to six acts and about ten hours of Bayern 2 live broadcast each. The venue, as always, is the partially covered Passion Theater Oberammergau with around 2,000 seats.
The opening on July 31st features FIVA, one of the most important spoken-word artists in the German-speaking world. Alongside her on stage are The Magic Mumble Jumble, Falschgeld, Lusterboden, and Loisach Marci – plus the winners of the BR Pop Radar competition.
On Saturday, August 1st, Dreiviertelblut, one of the central acts of the modern dialect music scene, will headline. Also performing are AVEC, DIS M, Lenze und de Buam, and Fättes B.
