90th Anniversary — Tub Race on the Schiltach on Rose Monday
The Da-Bach-na-Fahrt originated in 1936 from an idea by Schramberg jesters: Why not ride down the Schiltach in a 'Zuber' (a wooden tub formerly used for transporting wood)? What started as a prank has become a folk custom of global renown, known far beyond this Black Forest town. The 90th edition on Rose Monday, February 16, 2026, marks an anniversary that will attract national media attention.
Over 40 two-person teams typically register for the race — from experienced regular crews to first-time participants. Each team builds its own tub: traditionally from wood, often with imaginative decorations (ships, animals, political satire). Before the start from the Stadtgarten, the tubs glide unharmed through the city center in a parade at 11 AM — the crowd's highlight before the actual whitewater race.
The starting gun fires precisely at 1 PM at the Stadtgarten. The tubs plunge into the Schiltach (also called Kirchenbach by the locals), which rushes through narrow city streets and under bridges. Weirs, rocky steps, and the narrow streambed create exciting moments: capsizing is part of the game, and many tubs arrive at the finish line in pieces. Staying dry is the exception.
The Bach-na-Fahrt is part of the Swabian-Alemannic Fasnet, celebrated in Schramberg for centuries with witches, Hansel figures, and the Narrenzunft (jesters' guild). A full Fasnet weekend takes place around the Bach-na-Fahrt, with a Hemdglonker procession, jesters' gathering, and the main parade. But the Bach race on Rose Monday is the undisputed crowning glory — unique, with no equivalent worldwide.
The course along the Schiltach is narrow. The best viewing spots (Schloßstraße, by the bridges) are crowded from 12 PM onwards. Splashing water, cold weather, long waits — if you want to be there, arrive early, wear winter-proof clothing, and sturdy shoes. Schramberg's restaurants open in the morning, and many serve 'Bach-na-Fahrer' specialties.
The 90th Bach-na-Fahrt marks a significant anniversary for the Schramberg custom. Over 40 teams in self-built, often satirically decorated tubs (boats, animals, politicians, comic characters) compete. The traditional morning parade showcases the tubs in their pristine condition before the rushing Schiltach does its work.
