Pop Art in the MuseumsQuartier Tirschenreuth

With the major exhibition "Summer in Town – James Rizzi goes Tirschenreuth", the MuseumsQuartier Tirschenreuth is making a cultural statement in the Upper Palatinate province. From May 30 to August 2, 2026, over 500 works by the New York pop artist James Rizzi (1950–2011) will be on display at Regensburger Straße 6.

Six Thematic Worlds

The exhibition is divided into six thematic areas that make Rizzi's work accessible in all its facets:

  • "My New York City" – the iconic, colorful cityscapes of New York
  • "Love & Peace" – Rizzi's motifs of peace and love
  • Animal Worlds – his recurring cast of stylized animals
  • Underwater Worlds – marine fantasy landscapes
  • 3D Print Graphics – Rizzi is considered the inventor of 3D print graphics
  • "My SoHo Studio" as a 360° Room Installation – a walk-in replica of his New York studio

James Rizzi (1950–2011) – Pop Art from Brooklyn

James Rizzi was a Brooklyn-born pop artist who gained worldwide fame for his brightly colored, often naive-looking cityscapes. He is considered the inventor of 3D print graphics, where images gain spatial depth through several superimposed layers. Rizzi died in New York in 2011; his work has been the subject of international traveling exhibitions ever since.

Culture and Shopping Night on July 10

A special program highlight is the James Rizzi Culture and Shopping Night on July 10, 2026: From 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM, Tirschenreuth's city center – especially the market square – will be transformed into an artistic-commercial pop art stage with extended store opening hours, a special program in the MuseumsQuartier, and live events along the main street.

Kids Artline and Family Program

Especially for children, there is the Kids Artline – a child-friendly parcours through the exhibition with interactive stations. The exhibition is explicitly designed to be family-friendly and suitable for day trips with children.

Tirschenreuth and the MuseumsQuartier

The MuseumsQuartier Tirschenreuth (MQ) is an art and cultural museum in the historic monastery district of the Upper Palatinate district town of Tirschenreuth in the Tirschenreuth district, Bavaria. Tirschenreuth (around 9,000 inhabitants) is located in the Stiftland region, on the Czech border, and has established itself as a cultural destination in recent years with the Fischhofpark (State Garden Show 2013) and the MuseumsQuartier.
