World premiere of the Baron of Lies musical in the Rose Arena of the Europa-Rosarium
June 6, 2026, marks a special day for Theater Eisleben: with Münchhausen — The Musical, the company is staging its own musical premiere. The venue is not its home stage in Lutherstadt Eisleben, but the Rose Arena at the Europa-Rosarium Sangerhausen – an open-air location boasting 8,700 varieties and over 80,000 rose plants, making it one of the world's largest rose collections.
The musical tells the stories of the famous Baron of Lies, Karl Friedrich Hieronymus Freiherr von Münchhausen (1720–1797) – the nobleman from Lower Saxony whose incredible tales of adventure made him a European literary and cultural icon. How does a man ride a cannonball? How does he pull himself out of a swamp by his own pigtail? How does he travel to Turkey and dine with the Sultan? The play sets Münchhausen's most famous episodes to music and stage performance.
Theater Eisleben – a fixture in the cultural life of the Mansfeld-Südharz district for decades – is banking on an ambitious house production with the Münchhausen musical. The composer, lyricist, director, and choreographer are all from within the company or the regional area. The premiere is deliberately being held in Sangerhausen because the Rose Arena offers better open-air acoustics and seating capacity than the theater hall in Eisleben.
Visitors attending the musical can perfectly combine their day: explore the Europa-Rosarium in the morning and afternoon. With its rose pyramids, water features, and thematically arranged rose gardens, it is one of the most beautiful places for a stroll in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. The performance begins at 7:30 PM – after sunset in May/June, the roses will glow, the stage will be illuminated, and the musical can begin.
The world premiere of Münchhausen — The Musical will take place on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at 7:30 PM in the open-air Rose Arena of the Europa-Rosarium Sangerhausen. A house production by Theater Eisleben. Subsequent performances are expected in the summer of 2026.
Artistic direction, cast, and composer will be announced by Theater Eisleben in the months leading up to the premiere.
