Largest Volksfest in the Sonneberg district on the third weekend of August
The Stänichä Kerwa – dialect for "Steinach Kirchweih" – is the major summer highlight in the southern Thuringian Sonneberg district. It is traditionally celebrated on the third weekend of August around the market square and is one of the largest and most atmospheric Kirchweih festivals in the region between the Rennsteig ridge and the Franconian border. The fact that the name is in dialect reveals the cultural crossroads: Steinach lies at the intersection of Thuringia and Franconia, and the festival visibly embodies both traditions.
For five days, the historic market square of Steinach is almost unrecognizable. Over 20 amusement rides, from classic carousels to modern thrill rides, more than 120 market stalls offering snacks, sweets, toys, and crafts, as well as a large festival tent run by local clubs, ensure a packed program. Every evening, different bands and brass bands from Thuringia and Franconia perform in the festival tent, accompanied by bratwurst, fried cheese, regional beer, and, of course, Franconian specialties.
The emotional centerpiece of the Kerwa is the grand parade on Sunday afternoon. Clubs from Steinach and the surrounding villages, decorated floats, music bands, and traditional costume groups march through the town center. The parade is a family event: generations meet at the roadside, children catch candy, and older Steinach residents recognize relatives on the floats.
As a spectacular finale, a large fireworks display illuminates the sky above the market square on Monday evening. It marks the official end of the Kerwa and is known far beyond the town limits. Those who want a good spot should arrive early – the fireworks attract visitors from the entire Sonneberg district as well as neighboring Upper Franconia.
The Stänichä Kerwa is more than just a Volksfest. It is a point of identity for a region that has lost much with the decline of the traditional toy and glass industries but keeps its festival culture alive. If you travel to southern Thuringia, this is one of the best occasions to experience the region in its full atmosphere.
The program for the Stänichä Kerwa 2026 follows the proven structure of previous years: opening on Thursday evening, continuous festival operation from Friday to Sunday, the parade on Sunday afternoon, and a grand fireworks display as the finale on Monday evening. In the festival tent of the town of Steinach, different bands and brass bands from Thuringia and Franconia perform on all festival days. The exact band names and times will be announced by the town administration and the Kirmesgesellschaft (festival committee) in the weeks before the festival on the official website.
The complete band program will be published before the festival on steinach-thueringen.de and in the Kirmesforum.
Admission to the festival grounds is free. Amusement rides and food/drinks are charged individually.
Steinach is located on the B89 between Sonneberg and Eisfeld. Train connections via Sonneberg (main station), then by bus or taxi (approx. 12 km). Accessible by car via the A73 (Eisfeld exit). Park-and-Ride facilities will be set up on the outskirts of town.
Admission to the festival grounds is free. Amusement rides and food/drinks are charged individually.
Holiday accommodations in Steinach and the surrounding area (Sonneberg, Lauscha, Neuhaus am Rennweg) should be booked well in advance – the festival fills the region's guesthouses.
