A Christmas Market by Associations, for Associations

The Rüsselsheim Christmas Market on the Marktplatz is a special species: entirely run by local associations. This is unusual for a town of this size (approx. 65,000 inhabitants) and makes the market a reflection of the association life in the Groß-Gerau district. Interested associations apply to the city each year for a stall permit – an open, accessible process.

Marktplatz on the Main Bend

The venue is the Marktplatz in the center of Rüsselsheim am Main – the city best known for the Opel plant and Rüsselsheim Fortress. The fortress is just a few steps away from the Marktplatz; the Mainufer Park complements the Christmas atmosphere.

Mulled Wine, Apple Wine, Culinary Delights

The beverage selection follows Hessian classics: Glühwein (mulled wine) and hot Apfelwein (apple wine) (the Southern German-Rhenish Hessian counterpart to the North) dominate, supplemented by punch, beer, and non-alcoholic hot drinks. The food ranges from Bratwurst and Reibekuchen (potato pancakes) to homemade specialties from the associations.

Three Additional Neighborhood Markets

What makes Rüsselsheim unique: there isn't just the Marktplatz market, but also three additional neighborhood Christmas markets, all run by association life:

• Bauschheim Associations' Christmas Market – traditionally on the 1st Advent weekend on the festively decorated Kerbeplatz, since 2007. The Bauschheim associations set up their stalls and sell delicacies and homemade goods.
• Haßloch Christmas Market – also exclusively run by associations, with unique features found nowhere else.
• Königstädten Christmas Market – in the third district.

Four Markets, One City

The constellation of four independent Christmas markets in a single city makes Rüsselsheim a special case in the Hessian Advent calendar. Each market has its own character and its own audience – visiting several gives you a quick overview of the city's association life.
