About Volksfest Moosthenning

The Moosthenning Volksfest is the largest summer festival in the municipality of Moosthenning in the Lower Bavarian district of Dingolfing-Landau. For four days, the festival grounds at the parish church are transformed into a Bavarian beer tent landscape with a beer tent, beer garden, carousels, and shooting galleries. The highlight is the grand Volksfestauszug (festival parade) on Friday evening, where local heritage and traditional costume clubs, fire brigades, marksmen, and music bands from all over the region march through the village in colourful traditional attire. In 2026, the Volksfest will celebrate its 30th edition – a jubilee for the deeply traditional Volksfest culture of Lower Bavaria.

Lower Bavarian Volksfest in the Village

The Moosthenning Volksfest is part of the great tradition of Lower Bavarian village Volksfeste – those small but identity-shaping Wiesn (fairground) events celebrated in almost every village between the Danube and the Isar during the summer months. The organizer is the Volksfestring Moosthenning, a community of local clubs, supported by the Heimat- und Volkstrachtenverein Moosthenning (Local Heritage and Traditional Costume Club) with its motto "Sitt' und Tracht der Alten wollen wir erhalten!" (We want to preserve the customs and traditions of our ancestors!).

Volksfestauszug – The Centrepiece

The grand Volksfest traditionally begins with a solemn Volksfestauszug (festival parade), which opens the festival week. The traditional costume club, young men's associations, marksmen, veterans' comradeships, and the fire brigades from the surrounding hamlets (Dornwang, Inkofen, Otzing) march with music bands from the village centre to the festival grounds. Members of the Heimat- und Volkstrachtenverein appear in the complete Lower Bavarian festive attire: men in jackets and Lederhosen, women in colourful Dirndls with festive jewellery.

Beer Tent and Beer Garden

On the Volksfestplatz (festival grounds) directly at the parish church, there is a cosy beer tent for around 800–1,000 people and a leafy beer garden. Festival beer from a local Lower Bavarian brewery is served. On stage, folk music, party, and cover bands from the Lower Bavarian-Upper Austrian region play daily. The festival grounds are complemented by carousels, shooting galleries, candy stalls, and small rides for children.

Moosthenning – A Lower Bavarian Village of Tradition

Moosthenning is a municipality with around 2,200 inhabitants in the District of Dingolfing-Landau in Lower Bavaria (State of Bavaria). The municipality is located between the Isar and Großer Vils rivers on the Lower Bavarian plateau and is characterised by agriculture. The strong club culture – traditional costume club, young men's association, fire brigades, brass band, marksmen – jointly supports the Volksfest. Lower Bavaria is generally considered the region in Bavaria where traditional folk costume is still most vibrantly worn in everyday life, and Moosthenning is one of the villages that particularly visibly cultivates this tradition.

Family-Friendly and Close to Village Life

Unlike the Munich Oktoberfest or the Gillamoos in Abensberg, the Moosthenning Volksfest is small, manageable, and unmistakably village-like. Anyone who wants to experience authentic Lower Bavarian Volksfest culture – approachable, traditional, with the charm of a village festival where almost every second person knows the others – will find it here.

Volksfest Moosthenning — edition 2026

The 30th Moosthenning Volksfest in 2026 will be celebrated from August 21 to 24 on the festival grounds at the parish church. The festival week opens on Friday, August 21, with the traditional Volksfestauszug. Members of the Moosthenning Heritage and Traditional Costume Club will be present in full Lower Bavarian festive attire. Four days of beer tent, beer garden, folk music, and carousels are on the programme.

Jubilee: 30 Years of Moosthenning Volksfest

The 30th edition of the Volksfest is a special jubilee for the municipality. The Moosthenning Heritage and Traditional Costume Club, which traditionally leads the Volksfestauszug on Friday, August 21, has included the jubilee as a fixed part of its annual club calendar. Friendly traditional costume clubs from the Lower Bavarian region are also expected.

Festival Week

Four festival days from Friday to Monday with beer tent, beer garden, carousels, and evening live bands. Bavarian Frühschoppen (morning pint) on Sunday morning with a brass band.
