Traditional wine festival of the Burgwerben/Kriechau Winegrowers' Association in the castle park
Burgwerben is a district of Weißenfels in the Burgenlandkreis, nestled in the gentle slopes of the Saale-Unstrut wine region, Germany's northernmost quality wine-growing area. The Burgwerbener Weinfest has been held on the first weekend of September in the historic Burgwerben Castle Park since the 1990s. The organizer is the Weinbaugemeinschaft Burgwerben/Kriechau (Burgwerben/Kriechau Winegrowers' Association), an association of dedicated winegrowers from the two neighboring districts.
The castle park, with its old trees and historic layout, provides an extraordinary backdrop. The traditional torchlight procession on Saturday evening, led by the reigning wine princess, winds through the village and ends at the festival grounds. Sunday opens with an open-air family brunch — a special feature that distinguishes the Burgwerbener Weinfest from many other wine festivals in the Saale-Unstrut region.
The focus is on tasting what grows on the slopes around Burgwerben and Kriechau: Müller-Thurgau, Weißburgunder, Riesling, and the local Silvaner. Plus Federweißer (young wine), fresh Federroter, and smooth Saale wine sparkling wine. The winegrowers serve the wine themselves, allowing you to chat about vineyard sites, vintages, and the peculiarities of this coolest German wine-growing region.
In the state of Saxony-Anhalt, in the Burgenlandkreis district, the Burgwerbener Weinfest has been a firm fixture in the event calendar for over three decades. It marks the start of a series of Saale-Unstrut wine festivals in September, before the grape harvest ushers in the quieter season. Those who shy away from the hustle and bustle of the Naumburg Wine Festival will find a pleasantly village-like alternative here.
The exact dates for 2026 will likely be published in early summer on the Saale-Unstrut tourism website and on weissenfels-erlebnis.de. Experience shows that the festival takes place on the first full weekend of September — in 2025, from September 5th to 7th. The program follows a proven three-day schedule.
The final program will be published in August 2026.
