Weißenfels Christmas Market and Ice Rink

Advent in the Shadow of Neu-Augustusburg Castle

Weißenfels, the city on the Saale river in southern Saxony-Anhalt, is worth a visit during Advent. Every year at the end of November, a Christmas market emerges on the central Market Square – overlooked by Neu-Augustusburg Castle and the historic town hall. It brings together two main attractions: a lovingly designed mix of stalls and a real giant ice rink, which becomes a major draw for children and families.

Around 40 stalls line up around the large, decorated Christmas tree in the center of the square. There's mulled wine, bratwurst, roasted almonds, regional handicrafts from the Burgenland district, incense smokers from the Erzgebirge, wool felt items, wooden toys, and Advent decorations. A large, illuminated Christmas pyramid on the market provides the backdrop, while small fairytale houses and children's carousels add to the festive atmosphere.

Courtly Christmas and Handicraft Market

For the first Advent weekend, the city hosts the Courtly Christmas: Historic inner courtyards, usually closed off, are opened. Music, punch, readings, and art are offered in parlors and vaults – a quiet contrast to the livelier market just outside. On the third Advent weekend, St. Mary's Church opens its interior for a special handicraft market.

Ice Skating on the Market Square

The real highlight for families is the ice rink. The area, set up as a giant ice rink, allows for over 25 days of ice skating in the middle of the city center – including skate rental and a children's learning area. Anyone who has been to Weißenfels knows: this ice rink makes the market one of the most family-friendly Christmas markets in the state of Saxony-Anhalt.
