Four days of Saale Open Air with Synthie-Pop Night, Medieval Market, and Fireworks Display
The Weißenfels City Festival is one of the major city festivals in the Burgenlandkreis district. For four days, the market square, the old town, and the banks of the Saale River transform into a continuous festival stage. The festival is organized by the city's cultural office, which puts together a remarkably broad program every year: concerts ranging from classical to synthie-pop, a historic medieval market on the Saale meadows, a vintage car rally through the city center, and a grand parade on Saturday.
2026 will feature a special highlight: on Friday evening, August 28th, the Synthie-Pop Night will take place on the market square – an open-air concert that will excite fans of dark 80s sounds and wave classics. With Camouflage, De/Vision, Kite, and 80's Express, four top-class acts will grace the stage, a combination rarely seen together.
While the main stage is located in the market square, a medieval market runs concurrently along the Saale meadows: artisans, historical reenactors, musicians, mead, and roast pork on a spit. The traditional opening concert of classical music will be held at the Neu-Augustusburg Palace – Weißenfels is the birthplace of Heinrich Schütz and proudly maintains its musical heritage.
Saturday, August 29th, is dedicated to the grand parade through the old town with historical floats, regional clubs, and traditional costume wearers, followed by the fireworks display over the Saale late in the evening. Sunday is Family Day with the Saale Festival for the whole family and a day dedicated to vintage cars cruising through the city center.
Weißenfels, once the ducal residence of Saxe-Weißenfels, boasts a rich history. The baroque Neu-Augustusburg Palace overlooking the city, the Marienkirche where Heinrich Schütz worked, and the brick Gothic architecture of the city center – all form the backdrop for a city festival that is among the most distinctive in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. Anyone traveling in the Saale-Unstrut region at the end of August should consider visiting Weißenfels.
From Thursday, August 27th, to Sunday, August 30th, 2026, Weißenfels transforms into a four-day festival stage. The festival is organized by the city's cultural office. Opening concert of classical music at Neu-Augustusburg Palace, Synthie-Pop Night on Friday, parade and fireworks display on Saturday, Saale Festival and vintage car rally on Sunday.
