Colourful kites on the Baltic Sea beach in northern Rügen
When the first strong westerly winds blow across the Schaabe in autumn, the kite season begins on Juliusruh beach. The Drachenfest uses this seasonal transition for a family festival by the sea: large colourful kites from several workshops across Germany are launched into the air, and children can also fly their self-built models. The wide, flat sandy beach between Juliusruh and Glowe is one of the best kite-flying spots on the southern Baltic Sea.
In addition to kite flying on the beach, the festival usually features activity stands for children, a kite-making workshop, a small food mile with hot drinks and autumnal coastal cuisine, and live music on a small stage at the beach access. The Bambini-Lauf (children's run) over 400 m, which is part of the Kap Arkona Run weekend on Sunday, is also integrated.
The seaside resort of Breege-Juliusruh is located on the Wittow peninsula in the north of Rügen and belongs to the Vorpommern-Rügen district in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. With its 9 km long sandy beach and the adjacent Schaabe spit, it is a classic family holiday destination. The Drachenfest traditionally marks the end of the main holiday season — and for many, it's the last beach party of the year.
The 2026 edition, as usual, combines the Drachenfest with the sporting weekend of the Kap Arkona Run. While Saturday is the main race day, the Drachenfest begins on the beach and continues through Sunday — with large kites, hands-on activities, and a family-friendly supporting programme.
On the beach between Juliusruh and Glowe, artfully designed kites take to the sky, and children can craft and fly their own kites. A small stage at the beach access provides music, and food stalls offer hot drinks and regional specialities. The Bambini-Lauf at 11:00 AM on Sunday is integrated.
Detailed programme will be published shortly on breege.de.
Admission to the Drachenfest is free. Food, kite materials, and possibly craft activities are paid for individually. Participation in the Bambini-Lauf is advertised separately via kap-arkona-lauf.de.
By car via B96 / L30 to Juliusruh, paid parking spaces on the outskirts. By train and bus via Bergen auf Rügen with RVR line 2 to Juliusruh. The beach access at Fischerweg is the main entrance to the festival grounds.
The Drachenfest is an open event with free admission on the beach. Food, kites, and craft materials are paid for individually.
Bring warm clothing — it can be cool and windy on the Baltic Sea coast in October. If you come with family, combine the Drachenfest on Sunday with the Bambini-Lauf in the morning.
