Three-day city festival in the historic old town of Lennep — every two years
The Altstadt of Lennep, with its slate-roofed burgher houses, cobblestone alleys, and the central Alter Markt, is one of the most beautiful historic ensembles in the Bergisches Land region. Every two years, in even-numbered years, it becomes the stage for the grand Lenneper Altstadtfest. In 2026, the festival falls on the weekend of September 6th to 8th — three days of tradition, hustle, and Bergisches hospitality.
Traditionally, the festival kicks off on Friday evening from 6 PM with live music on the stage at Alter Markt. On Saturday (from 9 AM), flea market stalls open in all alleys — Team3-Märkte coordinates the extensive second-hand offerings, which are among the largest in the region. Stalls with antiques, handicrafts, bric-a-brac, and curiosities line the entire old town. Sunday (from 11 AM) brings the highlight: Sunday shopping from 1 PM to 6 PM, combined with live music, a children's program, and culinary stands.
The Klosterkirche Lennep adds a special touch on September 6th, 2026: From 1 PM, a separate courtyard festival takes place in its inner courtyard. This blend of historical-religious heritage and city festival bustle is the charm of the Lenneper Altstadtfest — tradition meets contemporary festival culture.
The district of Lennep, part of the independent city of Remscheid, looks back on over 800 years of town history. Once a member of the Hanseatic League, Lennep thrived on the textile trade and ironware craftsmanship. Today, the old town is a protected monument, and the economic center has shifted to Remscheid-Mitte. But during festivals like the Altstadtfest, Lennep once again becomes the vibrant heart of the Bergisches Land.
Behind the festival is the association Lennep Offensiv e.V., a coalition of retailers, restaurateurs, and associations that has been revitalizing the old town for decades. It also organizes the Lenneper Sommer, the Christmas market, and smaller seasonal festivals. The Altstadtfest is its flagship event — and an occasion to nurture the identity of the historic district together with the Klosterkirche, the local history society, and Lennep's business community.
Three days of Altstadtfest in Lennep — starting Friday evening with live music on the stage at Alter Markt, continuing Saturday with the large flea market through the historic alleys, and culminating on Sunday with Sunday shopping. The simultaneously running Klosterkirche Lennep opens its courtyard festival on September 6th from 1 PM, adding a cultural-spiritual note to the program.
