380 Years of Halveraner Kirmes — the Oldest Kirmes in West Germany
The Halveraner Kirmes is one of the few German Kirmessen whose uninterrupted tradition can be traced back to the 17th century. It has been held in the South Sauerland town of Halver (Märkischer Kreis) since 1644 — always 14 days after Pentecost. In 2026, the town will celebrate the 380th edition from Friday, June 5 to Monday, June 8, 2026. This makes the Halveraner Kirmes the oldest recorded Kirmes in West Germany.
Four Days of Volksfest in the City Center
The Kirmes grounds extend over Rathausplatz and the adjacent festival meadow in Halver's city center. Open daily from 2:00 PM:
- Amusement Rides: classic Kirmes attractions like Ferris wheel, Looping, Wave Swinger, bumper cars
- Breakdance: the rotating wave attraction, a Halver classic
- Nostalgic Carousels for children
- Shooting Galleries, Lucky Dips, Claw Machines
- Gastronomy: Bratwurst, Reibekuchen (potato pancakes), Schmalzgebäck (fried dough), Crêpes, Lebkuchenherzen (gingerbread hearts)
- Festival Tent with live bands and DJ program
Kirmestaler — Commemorative Coins with Tradition
A special feature of Halver are the Kirmestaler: special commemorative coins that can be purchased as souvenirs and are sometimes accepted as currency at Kirmes stalls. The coins have been collector's items for years and are reissued annually with changing motifs — in 2026 with the 380-year anniversary motif.
Halver — A Small Town with a Big Kirmes Identity
Halver (approx. 16,000 inhabitants) is located in the Märkischer Kreis (Arnsberg administrative district) in the southern Sauerland. Despite its small size, Halver maintains a remarkably rich club and cultural life — besides the Kirmes, the Kulturzeit Halver is also an established seasonal event. The combination of 380 years of tradition, family-friendliness, and community engagement makes the Kirmes a defining event for the town's identity.
Pentecost + 14 Days — The Proven Date
The Kirmes has taken place for centuries 14 days after Pentecost. Since Pentecost 2026 falls on May 24, the weekend of June 5–8, 2026 (Friday to Monday) results. This temporal stability — deliberately oriented around a religious holiday — is an expression of the centuries-old Kirmes tradition.
