Upper Franconia's largest free city centre festival — 16 stages, 60+ live acts
Bayreuth is known far beyond Germany for the Richard Wagner Festival on the Green Hill. But the identity-defining folk festival (Volksfest) of the Upper Franconian city is not the Festival weekend, but the Bayreuth City Festival on the first weekend in July. Organised by the City of Bayreuth and Bayreuth Marketing & Tourismus GmbH, it attracts tens of thousands of visitors to the city centre — free admission, open air, four full festival days in practice (Friday 6 PM to Sunday 10 PM).
What makes the City Festival a major event: It's not a concert with a side programme, but a festival mile spread throughout the old town with around 16 stages. Over the three festival days, more than 60 live acts alternate on the stages — rock, pop, jazz, big band, brass band, electronic, singer-songwriter, folk music. In addition, there are 20 so-called show groups (dance, performance, walk-acts) and over 100 food and craft stalls.
One of the hallmarks of the Bayreuth City Festival is the Artists' Market on Sunday in Kanzleistraße — an open-air gallery where artists from Bayreuth and the region display and sell their own works. In 2026, it will be in its 30th edition and, according to the organisers, is more gallery than market: crafts, painting, sculpture, jewellery, often with interactive hands-on stations.
The 2026 edition is marked by three occasions:
Bayreuth, with a population of just over 75,000, is an independent city and home to the University of Bayreuth, the administrative district of Upper Franconia, and the Festival. The City Festival is spread across the entire city centre, including Maximilianstraße, Rathausplatz, Sternplatz, and the pedestrian zone — and integrates the regional identities of Upper Franconia (Bratwurst, Upper Franconian beer, Bayreuth Aktien-Brauerei and Maisels) as well as international accents through the city partnership.
The 2026 edition of the Bayreuth City Festival combines three occasions: the 150th anniversary of the Bayreuth Festival, the 60th anniversary of the partnership with Annecy (Savoy, France), and the 30th Artists' Market. From July 3rd to 5th, the entire old town of Bayreuth becomes an open festival mile.
16 stages are spread across Maximilianstraße, Rathausplatz, Sternplatz, Kanzleistraße, and the pedestrian zone. Over 60 live acts (rock, pop, jazz, big band, brass band, electronic, singer-songwriter) alternate over the three festival days. 20 show groups (dance, performance, walk-acts) complement the programme. French accents come from Annecy: Savoyard culinary delights, French bands, and dance groups.
As the 2026 FIFA World Cup falls on the festival weekend, public viewing is set up within the City Festival — if Germany plays on one of the festival days, the matches will be broadcast on a big screen.
