International Dark Music Festival in Kulturpark Deutzen — Dark Wave, Gothic, Electro and Readings
The NCN distinguishes itself from larger sister festivals in the black scene, such as the Wave-Gotik-Treffen Leipzig or M'era Luna in Hildesheim, through its deliberately small, almost intimate character. With around 2,500 visitors, the festival remains manageable, distances on the festival grounds are short, and the exchange between bands and audience is closer than at major scene festivals. This familiarity has become a hallmark over the years and is the reason why tickets usually sell out months before the festival.
Kulturpark Deutzen is located in a former open-cast lignite mining area of the Central German Lignite Mining District, but today it is a green park with mature trees. The five stages are spread across the grounds: the Amphitheatre Stage as the main stage, the Park Stage for mid-sized acts, the Culture Stage in a covered hall, the Forest Stage for intimate acoustic concerts and Neo-Folk, and the Reading Stage for spoken-word performances and readings. This diversity is a special feature of the NCN — it combines a musical program with a literary one.
In 2026, Marc Almond returns as the first headliner to the NCN. The British singer, known worldwide for Soft Cell («Tainted Love») and numerous solo projects, has played at the festival repeatedly in recent years and is considered one of the most influential voices in dark pop music. Also featured are Girls Under Glass (Hamburg synth-wave pioneers since the 1980s), Of the Wand and the Moon (Danish Neo-Folk), Die Krupps (Industrial pioneers from Düsseldorf), Peter Heppner (ex-Wolfsheim), L'Âme Immortelle, Melotron, Pankow (Italian EBM veterans), Samsas Traum, Actors (Post-Punk from Vancouver), and over 50 other acts.
The NCN offers an adjacent camping area, which is included with about half of all tickets. The other half of the visitors stay in guesthouses and hotels in the Leipzig lake district or travel in daily. The family-like climate is evident in the evenings around the campfires, in the Bachelor Pad area with its cocktail bar, and in the mutual appreciation between scene veterans and new faces. Dress codes are not prescribed, but the black festive attire of the Gothic scene shapes the image.
Deutzen is located in the southern Leipzig district in the state of Saxony, in a region that has developed from the former lignite mining area into one of Central Europe's largest artificial lake landscapes. Visitors arriving for the festival can easily combine it with a visit to the nearby Markkleeberger See, Cospudener See, or Hainer See. Leipzig itself is only 30 minutes away and an attractive destination for festival-week tourists — the music city is Germany's Wave-Gothic capital and will once again host the major Wave-Gotik-Treffen in Spring 2026.
In 2026, the NCN sticks to the proven format: Thursday evening warm-up with selected acts on two stages, Friday to Sunday the main program on five stages with over 50 bands. Camping on the adjacent grounds, a Reading Stage with readings and spoken word, a Bachelor Pad area with cocktails, and the familiar atmosphere that gives the NCN its special reputation.
