About Gluck Festspiele

The Gluck Festspiele are the only festival worldwide exclusively dedicated to the work of the reform composer Christoph Willibald Gluck (1714–1787). The festival is supported by Bayreuth Marketing & Tourismus GmbH; the artistic director (Intendant) is Michael Hofstetter. The festival uses historical venues in the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region — primarily the UNESCO World Heritage site Margravial Opera House Bayreuth, as well as the newly opened Friedrichsforum Bayreuth, the Historic Town Hall of Nuremberg, and venues in Fürth. Every two years, the festival presents operas, concerts, and experimental concert formats centered around Gluck's music, who is considered one of the greatest humanists in opera history: psychological depth and genuine human emotion, set to music about 150 years before modern psychology. In 2026, the festival will feature three of its own opera productions for the first time.

A Unique Composer Festival Worldwide

As the only festival in the world, the Gluck Festspiele are entirely dedicated to the work of Christoph Willibald Gluck (1714–1787), the great opera reformer of the Classical era. Gluck, who hailed from the Upper Palatinate, is considered by the festival to be perhaps the greatest humanist in opera history: his reform freed opera from the ballast of Baroque virtuosity, placing drama, psychology, and genuine emotion at its core — decades before modern psychology. The organizer is Bayreuth Marketing & Tourismus GmbH, and the artistic director is Intendant Michael Hofstetter, who is responsible for all opera productions.

Venues in the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region

The festival is designed as a multi-city event. The central venue is the Margravial Opera House Bayreuth, a UNESCO World Heritage site and considered one of Europe's most beautiful preserved Baroque theaters. In addition, there is the newly opened Friedrichsforum Bayreuth, the Historic Town Hall of Nuremberg, and performance venues in Fürth. Thus, the festival unites Bayreuth, Nuremberg, and Fürth into a regional cultural event in May.

Biennial Rhythm

The Gluck Festspiele take place biennially, meaning every two years. After the 2024 edition, the next festival year is 2026. 2026 marks a premiere in the festival's history: for the first time, three of its own opera productions will be featured in the program — alongside concerts and experimental concert formats.

Programmatic Focus 2026

The 2026 edition is themed „Amor und Psyche". The focus is on three Gluck opera productions: Iphigénie en Aulide in Richard Wagner's arrangement (concert performance for the reopening of the Friedrichsforum), Paride ed Elena with the sopranist Samuel Mariño and the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, and Orpheus in Berlioz's version with Valer Sabadus. The operas will be accompanied by chamber music and experimental formats that draw connections up to Schubert.

Significance in the Franconian Festival Calendar

With the Gluck Festspiele, Bayreuth, Nuremberg, and Fürth add a specialized, internationally recognized format of Early Music and opera reform to their already dense festival calendar (Bayreuth Festival, Bayreuth Baroque, ION Nuremberg Music Festival). The audience comes from all over Franconia, the metropolitan region, and the international classical music scene.

Gluck Festspiele — edition 2026

The 2026 Gluck Festspiele are themed "Amor und Psyche" and, for the first time in the festival's history, present three original Gluck opera productions. Venues include the Margravial Opera House Bayreuth, the newly opened Friedrichsforum Bayreuth, the Historic Town Hall of Nuremberg, and performance venues in Fürth. Artistic Director Michael Hofstetter is responsible for all opera productions. The program is complemented by chamber music and experimental concert formats.

The 2026 edition is the first in the festival's history to feature three fully original opera productions. The opening is the concert performance of Iphigénie en Aulide in Richard Wagner's arrangement, which also marks the reopening of the Friedrichsforum Bayreuth. This is followed by Paride ed Elena with the sopranist Samuel Mariño and the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, and Orpheus in Hector Berlioz's arrangement, combining three Gluck versions.

The festival unites Bayreuth, Nuremberg, and Fürth into a regional cultural event. The operas are accompanied by chamber music and experimental concert formats with connections extending to Franz Schubert. Early ticket booking is recommended.
