The Coburger Rutscher Has Its Own Festival
There are many Volksfeste (traditional festivals) in Bavaria — but few are as clearly focused on a single specialty as the Coburger Klößmarkt. At its heart is the "Coburger Rutscher," a particularly soft, almost velvety version of the potato dumpling. Unlike the Thuringian dumpling or the Bavarian bread dumpling, the Coburger Rutscher has its own flour-potato mixture and such a soft core that it "slips" (rutscht) off the plate if moved too vigorously.
The Market Square as a Culinary Stage
For four days, Coburg's central market square transforms into an open-air tavern. Local restaurants and innkeepers run stalls serving classic Coburg dishes — especially dumplings with roast and the famous Coburg Bratwurst — as well as new creations like gnocchi made from dumpling dough, dumpling Cordon Bleu, and dumpling fries.
Coburg — Residence City and Food Culture
Coburg, the former residence of the Saxe-Coburg and Gotha dynasty (the ancestral family of the British royal house), is located in the Bavarian district of Coburg, on the border with Thuringia. The historic old town with its market, town hall, and Ehrenburg Palace provides a grand backdrop that is perfect for festive celebrations. Coburg's food culture is shaped by its location on the Bavarian-Thuringian border — dumplings and Bratwurst are identity-defining dishes here.
Live Music Daily
Throughout the festival, various live bands perform on the market square. The spectrum ranges from cover bands and brass music to regional folk ensembles. Admission to the entire Klößmarkt is free — you pay for food and drinks on-site at the catering stands.
