Symphony concert under the open sky in the Coburg Rose Garden
The Klassik Open Air of the Coburg State Theatre is one of Upper Franconia's youngest and most successful open-air concert formats. Following its acclaimed revival in summer 2025, which drew over 5,000 visitors to the Rosengarten at the Kongresshaus, the concert is firmly anchored in the event calendar for 2026. The initiative was launched by three city councillors – Petra Schneider, Bettina Lesch-Lasaridis, and Sabine Kastner – who raised over €40,000 in donations for the 2025 edition.
The Coburg Rosengarten is one of Upper Franconia's most beautiful urban park landscapes. Originally laid out in the 19th century as a garden for the ducal court, it is now a popular leisure spot with over 4,000 rose bushes of 80 varieties, the Rose Pavilion, and expansive lawns. When the sound waves of the Philharmonic Orchestra drift through the trees on a summer evening, an atmosphere is created that a concert hall cannot offer.
The Coburg State Theatre Philharmonic Orchestra is one of Upper Franconia's most traditional ensembles. Under the General Music Director of the State Theatre, the ensemble performs symphony concerts, opera and operetta productions, and special concerts such as the Klassik Open Air during the theatre season. The exact programme for 2026 will be announced in the spring.
The concert is deliberately designed as an open, family-friendly format. Visitors bring picnic blankets or camping chairs, and food trucks offer culinary specialities – from Upper Franconian bratwurst to modern street food. Your own food and non-alcoholic drinks are permitted. Admission is free, making the concert an accessible classical music experience.
Coburg, a self-governing city in Upper Franconia on the border with Thuringia, was the residence of the Dukes of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha for centuries. As Upper Franconia's most culturally rich city, it boasts not only the State Theatre but also the significant Veste Coburg Art Gallery, the Coburger Convent of academic fraternities, and numerous festivals and concert series.
The second edition of the Klassik Open Air in Coburg is scheduled for Saturday, July 4, 2026, at 8:30 PM. The venue is once again the Rosengarten at the Kongresshaus, which in 2025 already proved with over 5,000 visitors that the people of Coburg enthusiastically embrace an open classical concert format.
The Coburg State Theatre Philharmonic Orchestra will provide a symphony concert under the open sky. The exact works and the selection of soloists will be published in spring 2026 by the State Theatre and Coburg Marketing. Food trucks and self-catering are permitted, and admission is free – the accessible format aims to appeal to classical music newcomers as well.
The Rosengarten is located directly at the Kongresshaus Rosengarten in the centre of Coburg, a 10-minute walk from Coburg station. By car, take the A73 (Coburg exit) or the B4. Parking is available at the Kongresshaus and in surrounding car parks.
Admission to the Klassik Open Air is free. Seating is not reserved – please bring picnic blankets or camping chairs.
Early July, on the concert evening. Arriving early is recommended as the Rosengarten is very busy on concert evenings.
