Braunlage — the Winter Sports and Walpurgis Town in the Harz
Braunlage is not only one of the most famous winter sports resorts in the Harz but also a significant location for Walpurgis Night celebrations. Its location at the foot of the Wurmberg and near the Brocken — the mythical witch mountain of Walpurgis Night — gives the town special importance in the Harz Walpurgis calendar. Every year, thousands of visitors flock to Braunlage for Walpurgis Night to experience the grand spectacle in the Kurpark.
Witches' Procession from 6 PM
The Walpurgis spectacle kicks off with the grand procession starting at 6 PM. The parade gathers on Kolliestraße and winds through Braunlage into the Kurpark. In 2026, the route is modified due to construction work at the ice stadium — the procession will bypass the stadium and take an alternative path. During the procession, witches, devils, druids, nature spirits, and all sorts of Walpurgis figures march together through the town. Many participants wear elaborate costumes, makeup, and carry props — an impressive visual spectacle.
Spectacle at the Kurteich from 7 PM
At 7 PM, the main spectacle begins on the banks of the Kurteich. Live music by the renowned medieval band Tänzchentee — one of the most distinguished acts in the German medieval music scene — provides the musical backdrop. Tänzchentee performs with hurdy-gurdy, bagpipes, drums, and powerful vocals, creating an archaic atmosphere perfectly suited to the Walpurgis theme. Simultaneously, fire artists perform with fire-breathing, fire-staffs, and fire juggling. Walking acts in fantastical costumes mingle with the audience.
Walpurgis Theatre Play on the Floating Stage
One of the most unique program elements is the Walpurgis theatre play, performed after 11 PM on the floating stage in the Kurteich. The play stages the mythical world of Walpurgis Night — witches, devils, spirits, nature spirits — using light, music, pyrotechnics, and acting. The floating stage on the water of the Kurteich is a visually stunning production that transports the audience to another world.
Walpurgis Fireworks as the Climax
The grand Walpurgis fireworks provide the crowning finale. A multi-minute pyrotechnic show unfolds over the Kurpark, bringing the Walpurgis theme to a spectacular close.
Thousands of Visitors in Braunlage
Walpurgis Night is one of the most important tourist dates of the year for Braunlage. Thousands of visitors travel from all over the Harz and beyond, many staying overnight in Braunlage to enjoy the festivities with food, encounters, and shared celebration.
