Three days of carnival atmosphere in Upper Franconia — the largest Samba festival outside Brazil
What began in 1992 as a spontaneous idea by a small group of Samba enthusiasts has become one of Germany's most important world music festivals. The International Samba Festival Coburg attracts between 150,000 and 200,000 visitors to the residence city every summer — almost three times the population of Coburg. It is officially considered the largest Samba festival outside Brazil.
The historic old town with its market square, castle square, and Anger provides a spectacular backdrop. International Samba bands from Brazil, Italy, France, Spain, and of course Germany perform simultaneously on several stages. In addition, there are Capoeira demonstrations, Brazilian dance groups, and workshops for drumming and dance techniques.
The highlight is the grand Samba parade on Saturday afternoon. Hundreds of drummers, dancers, and performers in colorful costumes march through Coburg's old town — a spectacle of sound, movement, and color that completely takes over the city for several hours.
The organizer is Sambaco GmbH, based in Coburg, Coburg district, in northern Bavaria near the Thuringian border. The curious connection between a Franconian residence city and Brazilian Samba music has developed over three decades into a firm cultural fixture of Coburg and shapes the city in summer like no other event.
The 2026 festival is officially confirmed: Friday, July 10, to Sunday, July 12. The organizer is Sambaco GmbH; the complete stage and parade program will traditionally be published in spring 2026. Between 150,000 and 200,000 visitors are expected again.
The stage structure remains as usual: parallel open-air stages in the central squares of Coburg's old town with short set changes, allowing visitors to move continuously between locations. The concerts often run until after midnight.
Stage locations: Market Square, Castle Square, Albert Square, Anger. Program booklet and exact set times at samba-festival.de/samba-2026.
Coburg main train station, short walk to the market square and festival stages. By car via the A 73 (exit Coburg/Niederfüllbach or Coburg/Untersiemau). City center streets are largely closed during the festival period — Park and Ride is recommended.
