The delicious onion festival in the old town of Beilngries in the Altmühltal Nature Park
The Bavarian Onion Market in Beilngries is one of the most distinctive culinary festivals in the Altmühltal Nature Park. For one October weekend, the historic old town along the main street transforms into a sprawling market, with the aromatic onion at its heart. Beilngries is located in the Eichstätt district in the state of Bavaria, where the Sulz valley meets the Altmühl valley – an area long known for its gardening tradition.
The festival's name originates from an endearing nickname: the people of Beilngries are colloquially known as 'Zwiebeltreter' (onion treaders). According to tradition, the citizens once had to tread down the tall green plants in the town moat around St. John's Day. Outsiders observed this and jokingly nicknamed the Beilngriesers this – with many long believing they were treading onions. In fact, onion gardens in and around Beilngries were once of great importance, and the market keeps this tradition alive.
At the center of the market are the culinary specialties revolving around the bulb:
In addition to the food stalls, farmers present their regional produce, and artisans and hobbyists display their work. Market music, dance performances, and a varied supporting program create a lively atmosphere in the old town. On market Sunday, the shops in the old town also participate with an open shopping day for families, allowing strolling and enjoyment to go hand in hand.
The Bavarian Onion Market is designed as a family-friendly two-day festival, combining Bavarian market culture with the charming ambiance of a historic small town in the Altmühltal Nature Park. Admission is free.
