Medieval Christmas Market by Candlelight at Kirkel Castle
Few Christmas markets in the Saarland have such an impressive setting as the Kirkeler Burgweynacht. The mighty castle ruins on the castle rock above the centre of Kirkel in the Saarpfalz district become the stage for a consistently medieval Advent market once a year. No electric sea of lights, no pre-recorded Schlager music — instead, candles, torches, Swedish fires, and live music with flute, lute, and drum.
The Förderkreis Kirkeler Burg e.V. (Friends of Kirkel Castle Association), which organises the event, places importance on not destroying the historical ambience with modern lighting. "Lighting technology only where absolutely necessary" is the principle. This creates an atmospheric, almost meditative Advent world that is refreshingly different from the large city Christmas markets in the region.
Stalls with handicrafts, medieval-looking products, incense, and Christmas decorations are spread around the castle courtyard. A lovingly designed Nativity scene exhibition tells the Christmas story, the tower trumpeter sounds the hour from the keep, and on both days, Saint Nicholas visits the children at the foot of the castle at 5 p.m.
The Burgweynacht's culinary offerings are also historically inspired: tarte flambée from the medieval stone oven, mead (honey wine), mulled wine, homemade potato pancakes, chestnut soup, waffles, and crêpes. The famous Feuerzangenbowle (mulled wine punch with rum) is served in the evening, as are warm stews.
During the Burgweynacht, the museum in the castle, which tells the history of the Imperial Castle since the 12th century, is also open. The entrance fee of 2 Euros goes directly towards the ongoing well excavations and the preservation of the site.
After postponements due to the pandemic, the Burgweynacht returned in 2025 with its 20th edition. 2026 will see the 19th edition in terms of content (counting is based on editions held) — a clear sign that the citizens' initiative continues to keep the heritage of the ruins alive.
For its 19th edition on the third Advent weekend of 2026, the Friends of Kirkel Castle Association is sticking to the proven concept: no electric sea of lights, no loudspeaker sound, but candles, Swedish fires, and live music. The castle is open on Saturday from 2 PM to 11 PM, and on Sunday from 11 AM to 7 PM.
The admission fee of €2 goes entirely towards the castle restoration. The castle museum remains open, the tower trumpeter plays hourly from the keep, and St. Nicholas visits the children at the foot of the castle at 5 PM on both days. The final detailed program with bands and special events will be published by the association in late autumn on kirkeler-burg.de.
Program details, including bands and minstrels, will be updated in late autumn 2026 on kirkeler-burg.de.
Admission: €2 per adult, children free. Proceeds go towards the preservation of the castle ruins.

Hotels in Homburg, Kirkel, and St. Ingbert. A stay in the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve a few kilometres further south is also charming.
Wear sturdy shoes — the cobblestones and uneven castle paths are challenging after dark.
