Day of experience and evening spectacle at Kirkel Castle — Craftsmen's village, knight fights, fire shows
Burgsommer Kirkel is one of the most beautiful castle events in Saarland. Over several dates — from open-air cinema in summer to the large medieval market in spring — the municipality of Kirkel transforms its historic castle complex into a lively cultural venue. The traditional Day of Experience with Evening Spectacle in the second half of July is the highlight of the medieval season.
Kirkel Castle is one of the most significant medieval castle complexes in Saarland. Built in the 11th century, it acquired its characteristic form in the 12th and 13th centuries. Today, the complex is a partially reconstructed hilltop castle with a keep, castle walls, and clearings where the festivities unfold. Active archaeological excavations are regularly part of the program — history up close.
During the day, a craftsmen's village spreads across the castle clearings: Around twelve medieval guilds showcase their skills — blacksmiths, potters, woodturners, weavers, felt makers, bookbinders, stonemasons, bow makers. Visitors can not only watch but also try their hand. Children can try archery, pottery, and blacksmithing — the ideal mix of historical education and experience.
From 6:30 PM, the grand evening spectacle begins: music and dance, knight fights, fire shows, fairy tales by the campfire. The atmosphere becomes particularly impressive as darkness falls — torches are lit, the music shifts from cheerful daytime tunes to mystical melodies, and fire artists transform the castle clearing into a surreal scene.
Kirkel is located in the Saarpfalz district, in southeastern Saarland between Homburg and St. Ingbert, on the edge of the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve. The region is characterized by rolling hills, oak forests, and medieval traces — castles, churches, old trade routes. Those who visit the castle summer should definitely stay an extra day to explore the Saarpfalz.
The main organizer is the Cultural Office of the Municipality of Kirkel. The main sponsor is Kreissparkasse Saarpfalz, whose commitment enables the castle to have "a secure future". The municipality has been awarded the ServiceQualität Deutschland certificate (Level I) — an indication of the professional organization of the events.
In 2026, the municipality of Kirkel will once again host the Burgsommer at Kirkel Castle. During the day, a craftsmen's village with around twelve medieval guilds, and in the evening, a spectacle with knight fights, fire shows, and fairy tales by the campfire. The exact date will be announced in spring 2026 on kirkel.de/burgsommer — experience shows it's usually a weekend in the second half of July.
