The 1st Advent in Kirkel

Kirkel is a municipality with around 10,000 inhabitants in the Saarpfalz district, located between Homburg and St. Ingbert. It is known for its castle ruins, the medieval Kirkel Castle with its distinctive tower. The municipality consists of several districts, including Kirkel-Neuhäusel, the main town located north of the castle. The first Advent weekend is traditionally celebrated here with a two-day Christmas market.

Wielandstraße Square

The venue is the Wielandstraße square in Kirkel-Neuhäusel. The manageable square is decorated with fairy lights, and wooden huts house exhibitors with crafts and culinary offerings. Unlike the large city Christmas markets, there is a quieter, village-typical atmosphere here – ideal for relaxed strolling without crowds.

Festive Stalls with Christmas Offerings

The exhibitors offer a classic Christmas market assortment: roasted almonds, crêpes, mulled wine, homemade cookies, Christmas decorations made of wood and fir branches, small gift items from craftswomen from the Saarpfalz district. Local clubs and the Kirkel-Neuhäusel heritage association usually run their own stalls – catering by local associations is a central element of Saarland Christmas markets.

Advent Atmosphere in the Saarpfalz District

The Kirkel-Neuhäusel Christmas market is one of many local Advent events in the Saarpfalz district. Those travelling to the region on the first Advent weekend can combine their visit with the moonlight market in Bexbach, the Homburg Christmas market, and the Advent market in St. Ingbert – an Advent stroll through the Saarpfalz.

Kirkel Castle as a Landmark

The nearby Kirkel Castle ruins are the landmark of the municipality. It is located about one kilometre from the market square and is often decorated with light installations during the Advent season – a detour is worthwhile.
