Christmas Market in the Middle of the Forest

The Kirkeler Waldweihnacht stands out from the usual city Christmas markets because it actually takes place in the forest — at the Pfälzerwald-Haus, the club hut of the Pfälzerwald-Verein Kirkel-Neuhäusel e. V. Nestled among fir and beech trees, without a city backdrop, without light pollution, the atmosphere is special from the very first step. The Saarpfalz district lies at the transition between Saarland and the Palatinate Forest — the hut itself is the starting point for many hiking trails in the neighboring nature park.

When it Takes Place

The date is traditionally the third or fourth Advent weekend. On Saturdays, the stalls open at 4 p.m. (so it gets dark and atmospheric right away), and on Sundays from 1 p.m. The exact date for 2026 will be announced by the PWV in the autumn.

What's Available

Arrival on Foot Recommended

First things first: Parking spaces at the Pfälzerwald-Haus are very limited. The PWV strongly recommends arriving on foot or by bicycle. From Kirkel-Neuhäusel, the hut can be reached in about 20–30 minutes on foot — the walk through the winter forest is part of the experience for many visitors.

Kirkel and the Pfälzerwald-Verein

Kirkel is located in the southeastern Saarpfalz district, right on the border with the Palatinate and thus on the edge of the UNESCO Palatinate Forest Biosphere Reserve. The Pfälzerwald-Verein (PWV) is a classic hiking club with over 100 years of tradition; the Kirkel-Neuhäusel local group maintains the Pfälzerwald-Haus as a hiking lodge. The Waldweihnacht is one of the most important events in the club's year.

Who Should Visit

For everyone looking for a Christmas market atmosphere without glittery crowds and city noise. Sturdy footwear and warm clothing are highly recommended — the forest is cool and damp in December. Anyone who brings a flashlight on the way home will have a clear advantage.
