Traditional Walpurgis bonfire of the KG Burgnarren Kirkel in the Saarpfalz district
Walpurgis Night – the night from April 30th to May 1st – is one of the most fascinating traditional dates in German-speaking regions. As early as the Middle Ages, people believed that witches danced on the Blocksberg on this night; lighting large bonfires was meant to drive away evil spirits and symbolically bid farewell to winter. In Kirkel, a municipality with just under 10,000 inhabitants in the Saarpfalz district, this tradition lives on – organized by the Karnevalsgesellschaft Burgnarren Kirkel.
The KG Burgnarren is known as a carnival club and is one of the most active clubs in the town. But it doesn't just show its presence during Fasching (Carnival) – it also organizes the Hexenfeuer for Walpurgis Night. This dual role is typical for the Saarland region: many traditional clubs not only take care of "their" main event but also keep traditions alive throughout the year.
The event begins at 6:00 PM at the Turnplatz. The club members build the woodpile during the day – usually from cut and construction material from previous weeks. When darkness falls, between 8:30 PM and 9:30 PM depending on the season, the fire is lit. During the early evening hours, food and drinks are available at club stands – Bratwurst (grilled sausage), Schwenker (sausage specialty), beer, mulled wine (a classic even in spring on cool evenings), and non-alcoholic drinks. The audience is mixed: families with children in the early evening, and later a more adult audience celebrating the start of summer.
The Burgnarren explicitly ask to use only the designated parking spaces. They also appeal to parents and children to refrain from typical "Walpurgis pranks" (shaving foam smears on cars, throwing trash onto private property) – so that the cleaning crews don't have unnecessary work. A welcome announcement that underscores the event's character as a family and club festival.
Anyone visiting Kirkel on a normal day sees the Kirkel Castle Ruins – one of the most important castle complexes in Saarland, situated on a sandstone plateau – and senses the historical depth of the place. In summer, the municipality of Kirkel and its clubs organize the so-called "BurgSommer" (Castle Summer) with open-air cinema, castle festival, medieval spectacle, and the Kirkeler Burgweynacht (Castle Christmas Market) in Advent. The Hexenfeuer of the Burgnarren is, in a sense, the prelude to this seasonal narrative – the fire that finally ushers in spring.
The event is part of the Saarland tradition for Walpurgis Night and is organized entirely on a voluntary basis by the KG Burgnarren. Free admission; the club asks attendees to use the designated parking spaces and urges parents to keep their children from typical Walpurgis pranks.
The fire will burn for several hours depending on the wind and amount of wood. The event ends around 10:00 PM.
Free admission. Food and drinks are paid for on site.
