Traditional Spring Market on Mother's Day Weekend in Theobald-Hock-Platz
As May approaches its second weekend and Mother's Day is celebrated throughout Germany, the traditional Limbacher Maimarkt begins in Kirkel-Limbach. On Theobald-Hock-Platz — named after the Baroque poet Theobald Hock — residents, clubs, and guests gather for a spring festival characterized by its family-friendly atmosphere.
The Limbacher Maimarkt is not a large-scale event, but a genuine village festival of the Kirkel municipality. The local clubs — sports clubs, fire department, carnival club, heritage society — participate in the catering, offering their respective culinary specialties. The market stalls feature a cross-section of regional offerings: spring flowers, local vegetables, organic honey, bread and cake stands, cheese from the Bliesgau, and Saarland wines from Perl.
As the local Limbach dialect puts it: "viel fein Zeich und leckere Getränke" (lots of fine things and delicious drinks). The food offerings follow Saarland's festival tradition: Schwenker (grilled meat skewers), Lyoner sausage with fried potatoes, fries, bratwurst, and spring salads. Accompanied by draft beer, wine tasting opportunities, and of course, coffee and cake — the Maimarkt on Mother's Day particularly caters to the desire for cozy afternoon culture.
Kirkel-Limbach is located on the edge of the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO-recognized nature conservation area. Visitors to the Maimarkt can combine their visit with a stroll through the spring landscape — scattered orchards, old oak forests, historic quarries, and Roman-Celtic traces make the region an underestimated gem of Saarland tourism.
The square is named after a forgotten but important poet: Theobald Hock (born 1573 in Limbach, died after 1624) was a Renaissance poet whose Schöne Blumen (Beautiful Flowers, 1601) is considered one of the first German lyric poets of the 17th century. The fact that his birthplace has dedicated a square to him demonstrates the historical self-awareness of this small castle municipality.
The 2026 edition falls on the Mother's Day weekend, May 9th and 10th, 2026. The event is organized by the Limbach local council in cooperation with local clubs.
The exact program will be announced on kirkel.de in April 2026.
