Whit Monday at the Fire Department

The Open Day at the Altstadt fire station of the Kirkel Volunteer Fire Brigade is a small but traditional event. It takes place on Whit Monday — when many Saarlanders are out and about anyway, and the brigade has a great opportunity to present itself to the public.

What's on Offer

• Vehicle Display: Fire engines to view, with commentary from the firefighters
• Demonstrations: Foam extinguishing, practice drills
• Children's Program: Water spray hose for kids to try, bouncy castle, sometimes a ride in a fire engine
• Food Stalls: Bratwurst, steaks, fries, coffee and cake in the afternoon
• Draught beer and soft drinks

Kirkel — Castle Town in the Saarpfalz District

Kirkel is located in the Saarpfalz district, east of Saarbrücken on the edge of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Bliesgau. The municipality is primarily known for Kirkel Castle, a medieval castle ruin on the Burgberg, as well as the nearby Reichenbach Castle. The Altstadt fire station is located directly in the historic town center, "Am Dorfplatz 4".

Saarland Fire Brigade Tradition

Volunteer fire brigades in Saarland are often more than just operational organizations — they are clubs, cultural anchors, and organizers of important festivals. The Open Day is an opportunity to gain insight into the work of the brigade, recruit new members, and at the same time host a relaxed club festival.
