World's largest VW Beetle and Bus meet with around 3,000 air-cooled classics on the Westparkplätze of the Trade Fair Centre
The MaiKäfertreffen Hannover was launched in 1983 and has been a firm fixture every May 1st ever since. What began as a small gathering of local Beetle enthusiasts has become the world's largest meet for air-cooled Volkswagens. The choice of date was no accident: Labour Day, a public holiday in most European countries, offers the opportunity for a relaxed journey and a shared day-long event — and the spring date of May 1st aligns with the tradition of the 'Maikäfer-Spaziergang' (May Beetle Walk), which gave the meet its name.
With around 3,000 registered vehicles, the MaiKäfertreffen is the largest of its kind. The Westparkplätze of the Trade Fair Centre provide space for an almost overwhelming variety: Beetles from the early 1950s (Pretzel, Brezel models), Standard Beetles of all years up to 1985, convertible models, 1303s, late Mexican series. T1 Buses (Split-Screen) and T2 Buses (Bay Window) from the 1950s to the 1970s. Karmann Ghia Coupé and Cabrio. Type 3 (Variant, Notchback, Fastback). Special models like Kübelwagen, Schwimmwagen, and 181 Trekker.
In 2026, the MaiKäfertreffen coincides with a special anniversary: 70 years of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles in Hannover. Buses and other commercial vehicles have been built at the VWN plant in Hannover-Stöcken since 1956. The close connection between the city and the brand is particularly evident at the MaiKäfertreffen — many of the Buses on display come directly from the Hannover plant and carry a special local history.
In addition to the parked vehicles, there is a large parts market offering original parts, restoration materials, tools, literature, models, and merchandise. Those looking for a specific part for their restoration project have a good chance here. Several live bands play throughout the day — mostly Rock 'n' Roll, Surf Sound, and classics from the 1950s and 60s, fitting the aesthetic of the vehicles. Sausage grills, bratwurst stands, fries, burgers, coffee, and cold drinks provide refreshments.
Although registration for participating vehicles is limited and requires a fee, visitors arriving by regular car can attend the meet free of charge. Families, VW enthusiasts, and day guests from the entire Hannover region gladly take advantage of this offer. The day is ideal for a leisurely stroll around the grounds, chatting with vehicle owners, and enjoying a snack in the spring sunshine.
The exact programme details (live bands, special demonstrations, anniversary events for 70 years of VWN) will be published by the organiser in spring 2026 on maikaefertreffen.de.
