Visselhövede Marksmen's Association of 1912

The Visselhövede Marksmen's Association of 1912 is the umbrella organization of the marksmen's associations in the Visselhövede municipal area. Founded in 1912 as a common voice and competition association for the individual village marksmen's associations, the association has consolidated the marksmen's tradition in Visselhövede for over 110 years. Today, nine associations belong to the group, from the Visselhövede Marksmen's Company in the town to the traditional village associations in Drögenbostel, Schwitschen, Nindorf, Wittorf, Hiddingen, and Ottingen.

Federal Marksmen's Festival on a Rotational Basis

The Federal Marksmen's Festival is hosted by one of the member associations in annual or multi-year rotation. On average, each association gets its turn approximately every eight years. This distributes the organizational burden fairly, and all parts of Visselhövede experience the role of host once. The hosting association provides the festival grounds, marquee, shooting ranges, and program design; the association coordinates the competition and the festival parade.

Festival Parade of All Associations

The highlight is the joint festival parade of all nine member associations in uniform, led by fife and drum corps and brass bands. The reigning king and queen couples of the individual associations, as well as the reigning Federal King, wear their sashes and crowns, accompanied by their adjutants and flag bearers. The festival parade marches through the host village and ends at the festival grounds.

Federal King Competition

The associations nominate their best marksmen for the competition for the title of Federal King. The competition involves shooting at an eagle or a king's target. Whoever lands the decisive shot reigns as Federal King over the entire Marksmen's Association for one year. In addition, federal trophies are awarded in women's, youth, and senior categories.

Festival Ceremony and Dance Evening

The festival ceremony in the marquee, featuring honors for long-serving marksmen, presentation of badges, and speeches, characterizes Saturday evening. Afterwards, a live band or DJ plays for dancing, and the marquee fills with marksmen, relatives, and guests from all over the municipal area.

Tradition Lives On

Even after more than a century, the Federal Marksmen's Festival in Visselhövede is a living example of practiced club culture and village cohesion. It is a benchmark and proof that the marksmen's tradition in the Lüneburg Heath on the edge of the Rotenburg (Wümme) district still plays a central role in the 21st century.
