Over 50 years of Heimatfest in the Bavarian Forest – Volksfest with three themed days
The Bischofsmais Heimatfest looks back on over fifty years of history – the 52nd edition in 2026 underscores its roots in village life. The organizer is the Bischofsmais sports club, which organizes the festival together with the municipality. The festival grounds are located in the center of Bischofsmais, a winter sports and pilgrimage resort on the edge of the Bavarian Forest National Park.
As with many Lower Bavarian Heimatfeste, the program is divided into several themed days:
A characteristic feature of the festival is the morning Gockerlverkauf (sale of roast chicken halves) starting at 11 am – the half chickens from the hot air grill are part of the culinary identity of the Volksfest. From 2 pm, the amusement rides open on the festival grounds, and from 6 pm, the evening musical program begins in the festival tent with Lower Bavarian dance bands.
Bischofsmais is home to the pilgrimage site of St. Hermann, named after the hermit Hermann von Niederaltaich (12th century). The St. Hermann Kirchweih (church fair) is celebrated close to the Heimatfest (in summer 2026 on August 10th and 24th). Together, both festivals form the festive highlight of the Bischofsmais summer.
From August 13th to 16th, 2026, Bischofsmais will celebrate its Heimatfest for the 52nd time. The thematic division of the festival days has been established for years: Day of Families and Seniors, Day of Businesses and Authorities, Day of Youth and the Young at Heart. The Bischofsmais sports club (SV Bischofsmais) provides the festival tent, catering, and the musical supporting program.
Volksfest classics like the Gockerl sale starting at 11 am, amusement rides from 2 pm, and evening music from 6 pm structure the daily routine. The festival Saturday traditionally becomes the musical highlight with a live dance band in the tent. The exact live bands for 2026 will be announced by SV Bischofsmais a few weeks before the festival.
Daily start from 11 am with Gockerl sale, amusement rides from 2 pm, live music from 6 pm. Program details will be announced by SV Bischofsmais on Facebook.
Bischofsmais can be reached by car via the B11 (Deggendorf – Regen) or the B85 (Regensburg – Bayerisch Eisenstein), turning off for Bischofsmais. By train: take the train to Regen, then bus 6087 to Bischofsmais (~25 minutes). Parking spaces are signposted at the entrance to the village.
Free admission. Food, drinks, and amusement rides are paid for individually. Reduced prices apply on the Day of Families and Seniors.
Bischofsmais, with the nearby Geißkopf mountain and the pilgrimage site of St. Hermann, is well-suited for an extended stay in the Bavarian Forest.
