Folk Festival in the Bavarian Forest
The Gotthardfest Kirchberg im Wald is the traditional folk festival of the municipality of Kirchberg im Wald in the district of Regen in Lower Bavaria, right in the heart of the Bavarian Forest. It has taken place every year since 1975, from Friday to Monday on the first weekend of July – around the 'Kirta', the Kirchweih (church consecration festival) on the first Sunday in July. In 2026, the festival will celebrate its 50th anniversary.
Three Clubs, One Festival
What's special about the Gotthardfest: It is organized jointly by three local clubs – the Trachtenverein (traditional costume association), SV Kirchberg, and the Kirchberg Volunteer Fire Brigade. They share the organization, responsibility, and work. This living community spirit among the clubs defines the village character and family atmosphere of the festival.
Festival Tent, Brass Music, and Traditions
The venue is the Old Sports Field. Over the four days, brass and dance bands provide the atmosphere in the festival tent, the traditional beer tapping ceremony opens the festival, and the program offers entertainment for all generations. For the 50th anniversary in 2026, Bavarian cabaret artist Martina Schwarzmann is announced as the highlight on the opening day (July 2nd) – her show is titled 'Martina Schwarzmann macht was Sie will' (Martina Schwarzmann does what she wants).
Tradition for Five Decades
Now in its 50th year, the Gotthardfest is a firm fixture on the folk festival calendar of the Bavarian Forest. It combines Kirchweih customs, club life, and festival tent culture into a summer event that attracts visitors from far beyond Kirchberg.

The 2026 Gotthardfest runs from Thursday/Friday, July 2nd to Monday, July 6th, on the Old Sports Field in Kirchberg im Wald, marking the 50th anniversary (festival since 1975). It is jointly organized by the Trachtenverein, SV Kirchberg, and the Kirchberg Volunteer Fire Brigade. Throughout the festival days, brass and dance bands will provide the atmosphere in the festival tent, along with beer tapping and a traditional program for all generations. On July 2nd, Bavarian cabaret artist Martina Schwarzmann will perform her show 'Martina Schwarzmann macht was Sie will'.

Getting There
Kirchberg im Wald is located in the district of Regen in the Bavarian Forest, accessible via the B85 (Regen/Cham) and by the Waldbahn railway. The festival grounds are located on the Old Sports Field in the village.
