Christmas market in historic Alt-Weil on the 1st Advent weekend — Lindenplatz between Stapflehus, Museum, and Protestant church
The Altweiler Christmas Market is one of the oldest and most traditional Advent markets in southern Baden's Markgräflerland and has been a fixture on the first Advent weekend for about three decades. The venue is the Lindenplatz in the historic district of Alt-Weil, the oldest core of Weil am Rhein. The organizer is Weil am Rhein Wirtschaft und Tourismus GmbH, in close cooperation with local associations and businesses.
What makes the market special is its intimate setting: Lindenplatz is framed by three historic buildings — the Stapflehus (a striking 16th-century farmhouse, now a gallery), the Museum am Lindenplatz (regional history museum), and the old Protestant church. This trio gives the market a contemplative, village-like atmosphere that clearly distinguishes it from commercial big-city Christmas markets. The lighting, the scent of fir trees, and the sheltered location between the houses create the famous "cozy and comfortable" atmosphere for which Alt-Weil is known.
About 50 exhibitors present their offerings: handmade woodwork (nativity scenes, toys, decorations), leather goods (bags, belts, wallets), basketry, original gift ideas, festive Advent floristry, Christmas cookies, punch, jams, honey, schnapps, and liqueurs from the region. On the culinary side, there is mulled wine, raclette, sausages, crêpes — the typical Advent market fare in solid southern Baden quality.
Weil am Rhein is located directly on the border with Switzerland (Basel) and France (Hüningen/Saint-Louis) — its geographical location is unique in Germany. With around 30,000 inhabitants, Weil is a small, elegant town with a distinct design identity (Vitra Campus with architecture by Gehry, Zaha Hadid, SANAA, among others). The Alt-Weil district is the historic core — before Weil grew in the 19th century due to the railway hub, this was the old village with farmhouses, the Stapflehus, and the church. The Christmas market brings this historical identity to light for three days.
The 2026 edition falls on the 1st Advent weekend and begins with a classic Friday evening opening at 5 PM — when the lighting on Lindenplatz shines for the first time. On Saturday, the market opens at 2 PM and runs until 9 PM — the main day, when visitors flock from Weil, the Markgräflerland, Basel, and Alsace. Sunday closes at 6 PM — a quiet family day with a classic Advent character.
