Hundreds of kites on Schillig Beach – flying displays and family programme
When the kite festival weekend begins in Wangerland, the sky above Schillig Beach is no longer blue – but colourful. Hundreds of kites of all shapes, colours, and sizes dance in the North Sea wind: gigantic show kites in the shape of whales, octopus tentacles, or colourful creatures, as well as stunt kites that perform true choreographies.
The 'International' in the festival name is its programme: Kite flyers travel from Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and many other countries to showcase their creations. Many know each other from the international scene; some present world premieres.
Staged flying displays take place throughout the day, with multiple kites dancing in the air in synchrony. Acrobatics teams demonstrate their skills with four-line stunt kites, choreographed to music.
For families, there are hands-on workshops where children can build and fly their own kites. Kite instructors offer tips on proper setup and safe flying.
Several stalls offer kites, stunt kites, spare parts, and accessories. Food trucks provide culinary catering on the beach, along with drinks and ice cream.
The wide sandy beach of Schillig offers ideal conditions for kite festivals: plenty of space, good wind conditions, and simultaneous proximity to parking and infrastructure. Furthermore, Schillig is part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Wadden Sea.
The 19th edition builds on the festival's growing international reputation. With participants from the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and Germany, Schillig becomes an international hotspot for the kite scene in July.
The wide sandy beach and the stable wind conditions on the Wadden Sea make Schillig an ideal festival location. The exact show programme for 2026 will be published shortly before the festival.
